Introduction Invasive homodynamic monitoring  can actually measure pressures within the heart.   Invasive homodynamic monitoring can be used for early detection, identification, and treatment of life-threatening conditions such as heart failure and cardiac tampanade. It is important for the nurse using homodynamic monitoring to be able to effectively and accurately use this modality.

Pulmonary artery Balloon (swan Ganz) Swan-Ganz is A Soft Catheter with an Expandable Balloon Tip That Is Used for Measuring Blood Pressure in the pulmonary artery. It is a diagnostic procedure in which a small catheter is threaded through a vein in the arm, thigh, chest, or neck until it passes through the right side of the heart

Indications Management of complicated myocardial infarction . Assessment of respiratory distress . Assessment of type of shock . Management of postoperative open heart surgical patients . Assessment of cardiac tamponade .

Purpose Assessing the status of the mitral valve. Measuring of pulmonary artery pressure. Measuring of right atrium pressure. Measuring of right ventricle pressure. Measuring of cardiac out put. indirect measurement of the pressure in the left atrium of the heart Assessing the status of the mitral valve.

Hemodynamic Parameters 70-90mm Hg Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP) 2-8mm Hg Central Venous Pressure (CVP) 8-12mm Hg Pulmonary Artery Mean Pressure (PCWP, Wedge) 4-8 L/min Cardiac Output (CO) 60-130 ml Stroke Volume (SV)  2.5-4 L/min Cardiac Index (CI)

Procedure The catheter is introduced through a large vein—often the internal jugular, subclavian, or femoral veins. From this entry site, through the right atrium to.. the right ventricle, and subsequently into the pulmonary artery. The standard pulmonary artery catheter (Swan-Ganz) has two lumens and is equipped with an inflatable balloon at the tip, which facilitates its placement into the pulmonary artery through the flow of blood. The balloon, when inflated, causes the catheter to "wedge" in a small pulmonary blood vessel.
