Laying the Foundation: Using CCLS Aligned Materials

Purpose of this Session Participants will be able to:  Identify key structures and design features that form this foundation.  Explain how the curriculum modules reflect (and support teachers to implement) the instructional shifts. 2

Critical Questions for this Session How can the CCSS modules support teachers to develop rigorous instructional experiences? How was the curriculum designed with rigor in mind? How does Module 9.1 create opportunities for rigor? 3

Overview of a Module Texts:  Unit 1: “St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves” by Karen Russell  Unit 2: Excerpts from Black Swan Green by David Mitchell, and excerpts from Letters to a Young Poet by Rainer Maria Rilke  Unit 3: Excerpts from Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare Number of lessons in the module:  53 (including module performance task) 4

Discussion of Module Structures and Organization Quads share findings and discuss as a team:  What did you notice about the modules?  What is similar to what you do now?
