READING ENRICHMENT FLIP BOOK Due Friday January 31, 2014

Reading Enrichment Project – MLA Heading First & Last Name Ms. Brown & Mr. Tramble 9 th Lit/Comp ____ Block August 26, 2013 Title of Book

Reading Enrichment Project - Setting Setting: The time and place of a story’s action Setting: Example from your book The main setting of Twilight is in Forks, Washington. The setting plays a major part of the story because the natural weather patterns allow the Cullens to live there. A lush, rainy forest populates most of the town. The time is not specified but appears to be “present day”.

Reading Enrichment Project O Protagonist: The main character in a story O Antagonist: Whomever or whatever the main character struggles against Example: Protagonist: The protagonist in Twilight is Isabella Swan. She is the main character because everything is from her perspective. Antagonist: There are many antagonists in Twilight. Edward can be an antagonist because of his reluctance to initially get close to Bella. But James is the main antagonist of the story. He wants to kill Bella to torture Edward. To him, it is all a game, a hunt. He is who Edward and Bella primarily struggle against.

Reading Enrichment Project Theme: the central idea or message of a work of literature Example: The theme of Twilight deals with the obstacles that face Bella’s and Edward’s love. Despite all the risks and problems, sometimes love is worth the struggle.

Reading EnrichmentProject O Point of view – the perspective from which a story is told O 1 st person – a character, usually the protagonist, tells the story using the pronoun “I” O 3 rd person limited – an outside narrator tells the story but zooms in on the thoughts, feelings, and experiences of just one character O 3 rd person omniscient – an all-knowing voice tells the story and can relate information about the past, present, or future from the perspective of any character in the story

Reading Enrichment Project Example: The narrator of Twilight is Isabella Swan. First person point of view is used in the story. “About three things I was absolutely positive. First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was a part of him-and I didn’t know how potent that part might be- that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.” ― Stephenie Meyer, TwilightStephenie MeyerTwilight
