4CNet Update June 30, 1999 Dave Reese Director, Network Planning & Development “Building tomorrow’s networks today”

The New Backbone QANH BAK QFRE QSTO QSD SAC QCHI QSV QSAL SLO WE

Why? u Current DS-3 (45 Mbps) backbone nearing capacity - need more bandwidth u Community College video project - need more bandwidth u Research projects at some campuses - need more bandwidth

More Bandwidth u Most current Sprint/AT&T DS-3 circuits being replaced by OC-3 (155 Mbps) u OC-12 (622 Mbps) between Los Angeles and San Diego u New vendor: Qwest (

More Reliability u Most of the backbone will move off CSU campuses into Qwest points of presence (“POPs”) u Telco-quality facilities: UPS, generator, etc. u Campuses will connect to Qwest POPs

“It has to be done when?” u Western backbone: July 1999 u Northern backbone: October 1999 u Eastern backbone: October 1999

In the metro areas u Pacific Bell providing OC-48 (2,400 Mbps) SONET rings in LA, SF, SD areas u Connect CSU campuses, Qwest POPs at OC-3c, OC-12c u Some campuses (LB, SB, POM, SON, HUM) are too ‘far’ from the rings to be included

What’s SONET? u High-speed optical (fiber) networking u Ring topology means that circuit failures don’t cause outages -- traffic re-routes around the ring in less than a second

SONET rings OC-12OC-3 Nx OC-3 OC-3

In the LA area... WE QANH FUL LA NOR DH To QSD To SLO To BAK SB POM LB To BAK CO CI

And in San Francisco... QSV SJ SF HAY To QSAL To QSTO To QCHI HUMSONCMA

And in San Diego QSD SD SM To QANH SDSC

“It has to be done when?” u LA Ring - July 1999 –Northridge, Los Angeles, Dominguez Hills, Fullerton u SD Ring - July 1999 –San Diego, San Marcos, UCSD/SDSC u SF Ring - September 1999 –Hayward, San José, San Francisco

“It has to be done when?” u Pomona, San Bernardino, Long Beach - September 1999 u Sonoma - already at OC-3 u Humboldt - OC-3 pending telco facilities

Connecting 4CNet to CalREN-2 u At UCSD/SDSC - July 1999 u At Anaheim - October 1999 –Caltech, JPL, USC, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, USC/ISI u Possibly at Sunnyvale - November 1999 –UC Davis, UC San Francisco, UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, Stanford

Related Upgrades: Abilene u Abilene is a NSF-recognized High Performance Network Service u CalREN-2 is connecting to Abilene in 3 locations u Abilene fees (per institution): –UCAID annual membership of $25K –Abilene annual fee of $20K –Pro-rated gigapop access fees from CalREN-2

The Big Picture u We’re building the biggest university network in the country u And making it better, faster, more reliable

What’s next? u We would like to hear from you on how we can help you… –Dave Reese, Director –Mark Crase, Senior Director
