Presentation transcript:

Partnership between University of Winchester and Hampshire Children’s Services for children in care * Annual residential (since 2006) * Taster days and evenings (since 2005) – age 13/14 to 24 * Work-ready programmes (since 2011) * Contributions to development events for social workers, designated teachers and foster carers * Training for University staff * Guest lecturers for degree programmes * Coaching for Care Ambassadors and careleaver undergrads (since 2012)

Genesis of the Programme Hampshire Teenage Pregnancy Partnership * Market research identified need for a ‘Visioning Service’ * Part 1: Many young people can’t see opportunities for their future. Current concerns focus on income and safety * Part 2: Many young people feel ill-informed about future options – can feel lost and directionless

Care Ambassadors – their role and needs * 14 young people aged 17+ who are, or have been, in Hampshire’s care system * Mixed gender, ethnicity, ability * Some are at university, some at college, some in work, some not in work * Strategic role * Team role * Individual role

Aims of Coaching for Care Ambassadors * To encourage sustained engagement in education * To build a supportive network * To create a team ethos * To enable participants to identify and develop skills, attitudes and values and understand how these relate to mentoring children in care

Role of Buttle UK in bringing the project to fruition

Taster exercise Select the 4 values which are most important to you

Aims of ‘Whatever!’ Youth Coaching * It does not focus on ‘lack’ but on possibility * It seeks to enable young people to connect with all aspects of their being * It is loving, safe and kind * It is expansive * It offers up the opportunity for the young person to become the ‘knower’ by learning how to listen to themselves properly

Objectives of ‘Whatever!’ Youth Coaching Participants will: * Have a deeper understanding of who they are * Understand the concept of taking personal responsibility * Develop courage, curiosity and congruence * Expand their view of the world to allow ‘bigger’ choices * Develop a sense of different perspectives making for more thoughtful communication with others * Gain confidence and self-belief

Key messages embedded in ‘Whatever!’ Youth Coaching * I deserve to be here * I am in charge of me * The past does not define me * I can make choices that are in my best interests * I can take responsibility for my behaviour * I can see the world as a bigger place that is all on offer to me if I want it to be * I am resilient and strong * I know how to ask for help when I need it * I will manage my feelings in positive ways * I know how to set myself goals and challenges and make them happen * I am courageous * I like me!

Personal statement or motto eg who you are in the world Who are you? What/Who is important to you? (interpret in your own way) What are you passionate about? What interests you? (if you had no restrictions) What are you good at?What would you like to achieve?
