My Trip to Great Britain In 1766 and 1767, I gave up my professional business in order to travel with my family. I visited England, Scotland, and Ireland. Because of my family and reputation I was welcomed and presented at court. I was consulted on American affairs by many distinguished people.
I was released several years later, badly treated and in very poor condition. Tragically, I never regained my health in the years that followed. I managed to move my family to safety, but I was captured and imprisoned by the British. New Jersey was overrun by the British in November of 1776.
I lost all of my extensive library, writings, and all of my property during the British Invasion. I died a pauper on February 28, 1781, in Princeton, New Jersey.
