FOCUS QUESTION: How did geography effect the lives of the Arabian people?

We have American soldiers in Iraq. Let’s see what we know about the geography of the Middle East.

That’s a good place to start. Raise your hand if you know why it is called “The Middle East”?

It was in the middle of… Europe Asia AND

GEOGRAPHY AND LIFE IN ARABIA For thousands of years, traders have crossed Arabia on routes between Europe, Asia, and Africa. Travel through Arabia was not easy. Travelers had to cross wide deserts with scorching temperatures and little water.

THE ARABIAN PENINSULA Look at the map on page 55 in the text. What bodies of water surround Arabia? Why do you think Arabia is called a “crossroads”?

CROSSROADS LOCATION The intersection of which three continents lies near the Arabian Peninisula?

EUROPE, ASIA, AND AFRICA

CHECK OUT THOSE MOUNTAINS. WHERE ARE THEY?

EVER HEARD OF IRAQ OR AFGANISTAN?

WE CURRENTLY HAVE TROOPS IN IRAQ…

AND AFGANISTAN.

EXTREME DESERT CONDITIONS…

HARSH MOUNTAINS.

WHY WOULD YOU RIDE THIS GUY IN THE DESERT…

INSTEAD OF THIS GUY?

CHECK ME OUT!!! My eyelashes and bushy eyebrows protect my eyes in sand storms. My nostrils close so I don’t breathe in sand AND moisture doesn’t escape.

MY FEET!!! What happened to my toes? My feet spread so that I stay on top of the sand…I don’t sink. Have you ever tried to run in the sand?

MY HUMP My hump does NOT store water. It stores fat. Fat gives you energy.

CAMELS ARE PACK ANIMALS I can carry up to 990 pounds, but I prefer about 350 pounds.

I may not look like a race horse, but I can reach speeds of 40 miles per hour.

RAISE YOUR HAND IF YOU KNOW WHY WOULD YOU NEED A CAMEL ON THE ARABIAN PENINSULA?

SAND DUNES! THEY ARE HILLS OF SAND SHAPED BY WIND. THEY CAN REACH A HEIGHT OF 800 FEET!

IT IS SOOO HOT AND DRY, NOTHING GROWS THERE. A CAMEL CAN TOLERATE THE HEAT.

IF YOU’RE REALLY LUCKY, YOU’LL FIND AN OASIS… A WET, FERTILE AREA IN A DESERT.

WHAT IS A CARAVAN? No, not this… …but this!

SEDENTARY Many Americans live a sedentary lifestyle. It was not long ago that we had to do much more physical work. Too little activity causes health problems. Many Americans live a sedentary lifestyle. It was not long ago that we had to do much more physical work. Too little activity causes health problems.

TWO WAYS OF LIFE PLEASE LOOK AT PAGE 57 IN THE TEXT. SEDENTARY SETTLED. means SETTLED. Sedentary people lived in towns. Sedentary people lived in towns. NOMADIC MOVES FROM PLACE TO PLACE. means MOVES FROM PLACE TO PLACE.

WHAT IS A SOUK? A market or bazaar where nomads and merchants traded goods.A market or bazaar where nomads and merchants traded goods.

A SOUK IS LIKE OUR MALLS We trade at the mall. It is where we go to get stuff to show off in.We trade at the mall. It is where we go to get stuff to show off in.

TURN TO PAGE 58 IN THE TEXT.

FRESNO IS NOT THE LARGEST TRADE CENTER. WHERE WOULD BE THE BEST PLACE TO GO TO GET THE LATEST AND GREATEST BLING BLING?

NEW YORK, LA, SAN FRANCISCO

WHY DID CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS AND OTHERS SPEND A FORTUNE AND RISK THEIR LIVES TO GET TO THE “INDIES”? WHAT DID THEY WANT?

SPICES

SILK

GOLD

SPICES AND SILK WERE THE BLING BLING OF THE DAY…SHOWING OFF IS NOTHING NEW!

WHERE DO WE GET OUR BLING BLING TODAY? SONY - JAPAN HONDA - JAPAN DIAMONDS- AFRICA APPAREL- CHINA

TRADE BROUGHT MANY DIFFERENT GROUPS OF PEOPLE THROUGH ARABIA. LOOK AT THE MAP ON PAGE 55. HOW DID PEOPLE TRAVEL TO AND THROUGH THE ARABIAN PENINSULA?

*Crossroad location *Europe, Asia, and Africa *Land trade routes *Water trade routes *Trade brought many different groups of people through Arabia *New ideas and products influenced Arabian culture *A caravan is a group of traders that travel together for safety. *Traveling traders live a nomadic lifestyle. *People who settled in towns live a sedentary lifestyle. *Towns became centers of trade and most had a souk, like a mall.
