Walk for Iraq (NZ) 2008 © Walk for Iraq

 Walk for Iraq is a global movement whose mission is to organize sponsored walks that generate funds for life-saving work throughout Iraq.  It also raises awareness of the current crisis in Iraq as well as supporting the millions displaced internally and in neighbouring countries. What is it?

Last year….  Walk for Iraq New Zealand raised $20,000 in humanitarian aid.  All the money was given to Refugees International (RI) whose work with Iraqi Refugees generates lifesaving humanitarian assistance and protection to the 4 million Iraqis who have been displaced by violence in their country.

WALK FOR IRAQ NZ 2007

This year….  On Saturday the 17th of May 2008 we will be taking part in an 11km walk in Auckland's City Centre from Victoria Park, along Tamaki Drive all the way to Saint Heliers Bay. Every dollar raised will go to UNICEF's efforts in Iraq. 11km walk

Iraq’s Children: The Facts  60 % of children have no regular access to safe drinking water.  Only 20 % outside Baghdad have working sewerage in their community.  Children are orphaned by violence almost daily. Tens of thousands of Iraqi children have lost parents, siblings and other family members to violence.  At least 1/5 primary school-age children are unable to go to school.  Some 600,000 children are among the 1.2 million Iraqis displaced over the past two years. Most families are still unable to return home.  Rates of cholera and malnutrition are increasing, rates of immunization are decreasing.

UNICEF AND IRAQ  UNICEF is still working inside every governorate of Iraq, delivering assistance to Iraqi children even in the most unsafe areas. Their activities include:  Emergency health care  Immunization campaigns  Safe drinking water  Improving sanitation  Critical protective support  Emergency education programs.
