Gas and Anti-Iraq War Poem By: Dylan Hartigan

Gas Three different types Lachrymator (tearing agent) Asphyxiant (chlorine) Blistering Agent (Mustard Gas)

Effects of Gas Mustard Gas: produce large burn-like blisters wherever it came in contact with skin.

Effects of Gas Chlorine Gas: destroyed the respiratory organs of its victims and this led to a slow death by asphyxiation.

Gas Masks Gas Masks were essential during WW1. They prevented lethal and serious injuries.

Anti-Iraq Eulogy It happens on a Monday, at 11:20 A.M., as tower guards eat sandwiches and seagulls drift by on the Tigris River. Prisoners tilt their heads to the west though burlap sacks and duct tape blind them. The sound reverberates down concertina coils the way piano wire thrums when given slack. And it happens like this, on a blue day of sun, when Private Miller pulls the trigger to take brass and fire into his mouth: the sound lifts the birds up off the water, a mongoose pauses under the orange trees, and nothing can stop it now, no matter what blur of motion surrounds him, no matter what voices crackle over the radio in static confusion, because if only for this moment the earth is stilled, and Private Miller has found what low hush there is down in the eucalyptus shade, there by the river. PFC B. Miller (1980-March 22, 2004) Two literary techniques used : Imagery, and metaphor.

TPCASTT TPCASTT: Poem Analysis Method: title, paraphrase, connotation, diction, attitude, tone, shift(s), title revisited and theme T I think the Title of poem means: The soldier died. P Paraphrase parts of the Poem The war was so violent and gruesome he couldn’t handle it and he killed himself. C Connotation of some of the words—changing literal meaning to implied or associated values They have very serious meanings and are deep words. A Attitude—What is the attitude of the author, characters, or yourself? He is very serious and is trying to get the point of how violent the war is across. S Shift—At first we think or feel one way—then there is a shift: identify the shifts and explain them At first we feel like it’s a normal day in the desert and then it gets depressing and serious. T Title revisited—any new insights on meaning or significance of title. Not at all. T Theme or Author’s Purpose To get people to realize how graphic and violent the war in Iraq is.
