Colonies SPAIN FRANCE ENGLAND

SPAIN

SPAIN – Santa Fe Capital (money) given by the crown. Government pays Spanish citizens to settle an area. The colony is organized by the crown, you have to have permission to settle in an area (where and how you can live), they make all of the laws and plan the layout of the cities.

Types of Settlements Pueblos – trading posts for economic reasons (traders & merchants) Missions – Spanish priests would convert Native populations (priests) Presidios – Forts and soldier outposts for military strength in the region (soldiers)

Exploration Crown pays for soldiers to go with explorers. Catholic Church sends missionaries with the explorers. Large groups of American Indians with organized Spanish government heads.

How did they make money? Selling Native Indians as slaves. Abundant precious metals.

Religion Catholic priests went out with every explorer. Natives compelled (made) to convert.

FRANCE

FRENCH - Quebec Early settlements in Florida - Spanish killed everyone. Primary French settlements are restricted to the Far North. Funded by joint-stock companies and the French Government. Quebec area was settled by... Organized by individual men based on their needs.

Exploration Not there as settlers – just business. Mostly men – very few women. Travel by canoe – wear native clothing. Mountain men and trappers. Samuel de Champlain’s Map of New France

Relationship with native Indians Intermarry Live with American Indians Treat the American Indians as friends, allies – respect. Integrate into the Indian slave trade.

How did they make money? No precious metals. Fur trade. Both parties benefit from trade.

Did religion play a part Early explorers take Franciscan monks to establish a mission – fails. (Franciscan very strict) Later, Jesuits come in. More flexible. “Win them over” with love. Converted Indians – common ground in trade.

ENGLAND

English - Jamestown Funded by a joint stock company Founded by merchants – want to get rich! First residents (105 total): -Gentlemen – 47 -Laborers – 28 -Boys – 4 -Sailors – 19 -Council – 7 No Women

How did they make money? Didn’t. Until 5 years later. Wanted to trade European stuff for gold. No precious metals in area Looking for a northwest passage to get to India for spices.

Relationship with American Indians American Indians spread out over a large area – no organization or unity in government. Wanted to trade. No intermarriage.

Did religion play a part? Not really. Conversion of Indians not as important as getting rich. Did not take priests or clergy to set up missions.

Did religion play a part? Not really….. –No priests sent in. –No missions established. –No conversion.
