Take 5 for Safety

Compressed Gas Association Rules / OSHA  Cylinder Safety Label the cylinder to identify the gas Ensure correct regulator or manifold is used Know how to safely install and remove from your system Properly secure when in use and when stored Open valve slowly when used Close valve when done Know the dangers of contents, read the MSDS, and follow proper procedures when using

When Things Go Wrong  If valve or regulator snaps off, all power is unleashed through an opening no larger than a pencil  Cylinders jet away faster than any dragster  They will smash through brick walls, spin, ricochet, and crash through anything in their path

Recent CGA Safety Alert - Hazards Of Nitrogen / Inert Gas  Two workers died at a refinery when overcome by an oxygen- deficient atmosphere. The first worker either slipped into the vessel or was overcome at the vessel opening when attempting to retrieve a piece of equipment that had fallen into the vessel. The second worker attempted to rescue the first worker and he also was overcome by the oxygen-deficient atmosphere. A nitrogen purge had created an oxygen-deficient atmosphere in and around the confined space.  An oxygen-deficient atmosphere can bring about unconsciousness without warning. In merely two breaths, an individual’s life can be endangered by low oxygen intake. Oxygen-deficient atmospheres might not be limited to only confined spaces. They also can exist outside of a confined space opening.

Recent CGA Safety Alert - Hazard Of Compressed Gas Cylinders in Magnetic Fields  Compressed gas cylinders, cylinder valves, cylinder regulators, other assemblies included with cylinders, or any other equipment used to supply compressed gases shall not be present in the same room as an MRI device unless proven nonmagnetic and/or tested and deemed suitable for this environment.  Serious personal injury and property damage has resulted from the use of steel gas cylinders in close proximity to MRI devices. One incident resulted in the death of a six-year-old boy when a steel cylinder was brought into a room containing an operating MRI unit. The magnetic forces generated by the MRI drew the cylinder across the room, striking the boy in the head.

Walking on RHIC Ring Road at Night  Use reflective vest  Use flashlight  Walk against direction of motor vehicle traffic  BNL has made vests and flashlights available to Guests in dorms
