Time to Completion by Department

Time to Completion Follow-Up  On average, students are taking approximately 4 years or 8 semesters to complete their degrees and certificates;  The data reveal that there is no significant difference in time between degree completion and certificate completion, even if degrees require more units;  … Therefore, what percentage of students are earning degrees and certificate at the same time (within the same department)?

Placement Results  Among students who took the placement, what percentage of students placed into basic skills?

Placement Results Findings  There is no difference in % of students who took the English/ESL placement exams by award type (AA vs. Certs)  Disproportionately more students who earned an AA took the math placement (83%) when compared with certificate earners (66%)  A larger percentage of certificate earners placed into basic skills when compared with AA earners

Average Number of Basic Skills Courses Attempted  Basic skills course was defined as any English or math course below transfer level or any ESL course below English 1/ESL 25 (including support courses)

Average Number of Basic Skills Courses Attempted  Although the placement data revealed that a larger proportion of certificate earners were placed into basic skills, AA earners were enrolled in more basic skills courses at SMC, on average.

Completion of English/ESL & Math  Completion was defined as earning an C/CR or better in ENGL 1 or AA-level math or higher  Examined certificate earners only because ENGL 1 and AA math are requirements for the AA

Completion of English/ESL & Math  A little more than one third of certificate earners had completed ENGL 1  Fewer students (about one quarter) who had earned a certificate completed an AA level math course or higher  The findings should be interpreted with the knowledge that some students earn a certificate and AA at the same time
