Placement Results Among students who took the placement, what percentage of students placed into basic skills?
Placement Results Findings There is no difference in % of students who took the English/ESL placement exams by award type (AA vs. Certs) Disproportionately more students who earned an AA took the math placement (83%) when compared with certificate earners (66%) A larger percentage of certificate earners placed into basic skills when compared with AA earners
Average Number of Basic Skills Courses Attempted Basic skills course was defined as any English or math course below transfer level or any ESL course below English 1/ESL 25 (including support courses)
Average Number of Basic Skills Courses Attempted Although the placement data revealed that a larger proportion of certificate earners were placed into basic skills, AA earners were enrolled in more basic skills courses at SMC, on average.
Completion of English/ESL & Math Completion was defined as earning an C/CR or better in ENGL 1 or AA-level math or higher Examined certificate earners only because ENGL 1 and AA math are requirements for the AA
Completion of English/ESL & Math A little more than one third of certificate earners had completed ENGL 1 Fewer students (about one quarter) who had earned a certificate completed an AA level math course or higher The findings should be interpreted with the knowledge that some students earn a certificate and AA at the same time
