4 Integrated Management of IP 1. Roundtable on Integrated Management of IP (August 2005) - experts from IP offices of Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and the United-Kingdom 2.Working paper on Integrated Management of IP - integrated management of IP under a “single umbrella organization” the IPO-Pakistan finalized and shared with IPO-Pakistan on January 2006
5 National Intellectual Property Strategy 1.National Roundtable on IP Strategy - Roundtable on formulation and implementation of a national IP strategy was organized to deliberate on the draft working paper developed on an IP strategy for Pakistan (August 16 to 18, 2006) 2.Working paper on IP Strategy - it contains: ▪ proposals on effective utilization of IP system ▪ recommendations for policies to promote innovation and IP assets ▪ it was prepared by WIPO Consultant finalized and sent to Pakistan in November 2006.
6 Training Study visit of six (6) relevant senior officials Study visit of six (6) senior officials (including Chairman and DG of IPO- Pakistan) organized on December 7 to 19, 2005, to three regional, modern IP Offices (Australia, Republic of Korea and Singapore). The aim of the training was to train the officials on management and operations of modern integrated IP offices

8 Geographical Indications (GIs) Protection of Geographical Indications (GIs) -advice on draft GI legislation - WIPO expert advisory missions on GI legislation took place in April 2005 and in July a draft law was prepared and is now submitted for comments to the stakeholders -preparation of inventory/database on GIs - Inventory/database on GI products only partly compiled by Ministry of Commerce. Task to be completed by IPO-Pakistan officials. -workshop on GIs, July 2006, in Islamabad
9 Support to IP Offices – Digitization of Trademarks Registry (TMR) records - Automated databases - Digitization of TMR records is completed – Training Courses for TMR examiners - One week training course for TMR examiners organized in Karachi in July – Training Courses for Patent examiners - One week training course for patent examiners organized in Islamabad from April 26 to 29, All newly recruited examiners and some senior examiners participated. – Provision of computer/office equipment - Seven computers (with scanners and printers) and multimedia equipment supplied to TMR and four computers (with scanners and printers) and photocopier provided to the Patent Office, TMR.
10 Workshops/Consultations – Protection of industrial designs organized in cooperation with SMEDA in Karachi, Sialkot and Lahore, April 2005 – Protection of copyrights in the digital environment, Islamabad, July 2006 – Enforcement of IP Rights, Islamabad, September 2006 – Trademarks and the Madrid System, Islamabad, December 2006

12 IP awareness Activities 1. Development of IP web site: - It contains gazette notifications, statistics, news, official notes, legislation… 2. Provision of material on IP (core books) - Two sets of IP reference material (around 70 books/publications in each set) were supplied to IPO-Pakistan’s Islamabad and Karachi Offices
13 Lessons Synchronized initiation of project by all partners Flexibility on organization (e.g., venues), substance and sequencing of activities Dedicated national focal point/resource person for (i) project and (ii) for specific programs Careful selection of national participants for each activity ▪ Focus on consultations with the most relevant stakeholders ▪ Information on other externally/internally funded projects to avoid overlaps and achieve synergies
