Creating Memory with Minimal Impact Advances in Arial Emission Management at Imation Corporation, Camarillo

08/982 OVERVIEW Imation Corporation Generic Manufacturing Process Potential Environmental Impacts Pollution Prevention Incentives BACKGROUND ARIAL EMISSION MANAGEMENT ACHIEVEMENTS

11/993 Imation Corporation Produces “Imaging and Information Solutions” IMATION CORPORATION Spun off from 3M on July 1st, 1996, with the mission: “To be the best global source for imaging and information solutions for customers seeking tailored products and systems for their information need” Imation Corporation, Camarillo: – World’s largest manufacturing location of data storage products – Annual production value (1998): $260 million – 48 acres facility in Ventura County – >500 employees

11/994 The Manufacture of Data Storage Products Creates Hazardous By-Products... GENERIC MANUFACTURING PROCESS Raw Materials Mixing Room Testing Coating Packaging Slitting Cartridge Assembly Solvent Laden Air Data Storage Product Wet Scrap Dry Scrap Waste Tape

11/995 … And is Associated with Numerous Potential Impacts on Air, Water and Land Resources POTENTIAL ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS Environment Point Source Emissions Fugitive Emissions Refrigerant Leakage Fuel Combustion Waste Heat Generation Waste Incineration (offsite) Vehicle Exhausts Industrial Point Source Emssions Domestic Water Consumption Storm Water Runoff Other Runoff Hazardous Waste Generation Recyclable Waste Generation Non-hazardous Waste Generation Noise Generation Land Usage Resource Usage AirWaterLand

11/996 Imation has Powerful Incentives for Engaging in Proactive Pollution Prevention Measures POLLUTION PREVENTION INCENTIVES “Pollution Prevention Pays” for Imation Corporation: Disposal Costs can be minimized by minimizing hazardous waste Future Liabilities may be foregone by avoiding the handling of RCRA/ CERCLA regulated substances Environmental Stewardship is an important part of Imation’s 3M heritage in terms of corporate image

08/987 PRESENTATION OVERVIEW BACKGROUND ARIAL EMISSION MANAGEMENT ACHIEVEMENTS Air Quality Program Emission Reduction Process Solvent Recovery Process (Adsorption, Desorption, Purification)

11/998 Imation Camarillo’s Air Quality Program Relies upon Advanced Solvent Recovery Technologies... Impact Reduction at Source Solvent Recovery Unit (SRU) requires 50% less energy than traditional systems, thereby reducing the demand for electricity & natural gas Reclaim - Reuse - Recycle SRU recovers over 99% of all air-borne solvents for reuse in the manufacturing process, thereby reducing air emissions Use of Best Available Technology Specifically designed Rekusorb system ( 1993) Fourier Transform InfraRed Spectrometry Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (FTIR CEMS) (1996) AIR QUALITY PROGRAM

EMISSION REDUCTION PROCESS Wet Scrap Dry Scrap Solvent Laden Air Iron Oxide Purified Air Spent Carbon Recovered Solvent Regulated solid waste Cement Manufacture Imation/ Solvent Broker Off-site Reactivation Incineration Wet Scrap Dryer Sparge Bins Solvent Recovery Unit

11/9910 …through Adsorption, Desorption, and Purification of Solvents SOLVENT RECOVERY PROCESS 3-Phase Process Adsorption of solvents onto activated carbon beds Desorption of solvents using hot nitrogen gas Purification of recovered solvents through decanting Output Purified air leaves exhaust stack Solvents are returned to manufacturing Input Evaporated solvents from production Pre-treated distillates from scrap SRUSRU

08/9813 OVERVIEW BACKGROUND ARIAL EMISSION MANAGEMENT ACHIEVEMENTS Ventura County Clean Air Fund Public Recognition Proposed Project XL Site

11/9914 Considerable Emission Reductions Resulted in the Ventura County Clean Air Fund... VENTURA COUNTY CLEAN AIR FUND Its history and purpose in a nutshell: In 1989 and 1990, the Camarillo facility cut its emissions from 350 tons per year (tpy) to <200 tpy. (Note: 21 tpy in 1993) These voluntary emission reductions were ‘banked’ as ‘Emission Reduction Credits’ (ERC). In 1991, Camarillo facility sold 78 of its banked ERCs for $1.5 million dollar to neighbouring Proctor & Gamble. The money was used to establish the Ventura County Clean Air Fund, which supports air quality programs and community environmental projects throughout Ventura county.

11/9915 …and Various Environmental Awards PUBLIC RECOGNITION Between July 1996 and 1998 alone, Imation Camarillo’s environmental efforts have been recognized with numerous awards: Waste Watch Award , 1997 & 1996 Gold Award for Continued Excellence in Waste Reduction Programs Waste Reduction Award Program Award Cal. EPA, Integrated Waste Management Board Public Service Recognition Plaque Rio Del Valle Middle School Recognition in Environmental Leadership California Regional Water Quality Control Board Imation Camarillo Environmental Awards Gold Award for Continued Excellence in Waste Reduction Programs

11/9916 Technological Advances Opened Possibilities for “eXellence and Leadership” Project PROPOSED PROJECT XL SITE Project XL : Inaugurated in March 1995 by EPA and Presidency Encourages environmental stewardship and innovation Pilot projects are granted regulatory streamlining as incentive Imation’s Project XL Covenant (1996) Individual and total Hazardous Air Pollution (HAP) cap Plant-wide applicability limit for criteria air pollutants State-of-the-art FTIR CEMS installment for monitoring Streamlined environmental management and reporting procedures (ISO like EMS)
