What are some ways our daily lives affect the environmental aspect of sustainability? This can be done as a quick, individual exercise or a very brief class discussion.

Read the Introduction and be prepared to answer the following: How does an ecological footprint differ from a regular footprint? What information could you use to measure your ecological footprint?

Can the earth’s ecosystems sustain our current use of resources? Challenge Can the earth’s ecosystems sustain our current use of resources?

Use the information you gathered on Student Sheet 4 Use the information you gathered on Student Sheet 4.1, “Ecological Footprint Homework,” to help you answer the survey questions. You may wish to prepare your own copy of Student Sheet 4.1, “Ecological Footprint Homework,” with average data for your community in case a student is uncomfortable sharing their family’s information or does not complete the Student Sheet prior to class. As appropriate, review the concept of an “average” person. More information and suggestions on how to review this concept can be found in your Teacher’s Edition.

For step 8 try to think of changes that are beyond routine ideas For step 8 try to think of changes that are beyond routine ideas. Be creative!

Are the footprints of the average person in other countries consistent with what you investigated about life in other countries in previous activities? This question is Analysis question 2 in the Student Book, which is a fundamental question in the unit. Be sure to review students’ ideas from this question in a discussion, and ask them to reflect on what they know at this point compared to the first activity.

Can the earth’s ecosystems sustain our current use of resources? Revisit the Challenge Can the earth’s ecosystems sustain our current use of resources? Based on the survey, the average resource use for the world is beyond what can be sustained because it requires an area the size of 1.5 earth surfaces. For a global lifestyle to be sustainable its ecological footprint has to cover only one planet or less.

Note that bold words are formally defined in this activity. Words in regular font are used in the activity, but not formally defined. The definition of a key vocabulary word should not be discussed as a class prior to the formal definition being introduced.
