The nervous system is Important because… Coordinates the parts of the body and the organs the control body functions The most important reason…

Well, have you ever touched a hot stove and immediately removed your hand without thinking about it? That’s because your nerves send a message to you brain telling you to not do that again…Did you know that the neurological relay race happened quicker than you could read this?

Components of the Nervous System –Central Brain – Spinal Cord –12 Cranial Nerves The Nervous System is the control center for movement, sleep, hunger, thirst, and every other vital activity necessary for survival.

Anatomy and physiology Spinal cord Spinal cord is a long column of nervous tissue that acts as a pathway for the transmission of information between the body and the brain. Has 31 segments, each control different movements of the body.

Anatomy and physiology Brain. Center of how we feel, emotion, memory, thought, and speech. -Cerebrum, large part of brain, divided into 2 halves. -Cerebellum, located on the back of the skull. Controls complex movements, like walking, talking, and balance. -Brain Stem, Connects brain to spinal cord. Controls involuntary actions and feelings like hunger, thirst, breathing, body temperature, and blood pressure. The brain sits on your skull. It has 3 main parts, Cerebellum, Cerebrum, and the Brain stem

CNS Central Nervous System Cerebellum Cerebrospinal Cerebrum Hypothalamus Medulla Oblongata Meninges Meninges Dura-Mater Meninges Arachnoid Mater Meninges Pia Mater Pons Varolii

PNS Peripheral Nervous System Consists of the cranial nerves and the spinal nerves. Connects the Central Nervous system to the remainder of the body. Sensory neurons transmit impluses to the CNS from sensory receptors.

SNS Somatic Nervous System 1. Gateway between the environment outside of the body and the Central Nervous system. 2. SNS comprises 12 pairs of cranial nerves and 31 pairs of spinal nerves. Some pairs are only sensory and motor neurons while the rest are involved in smell, vision, hearing, and balance. 3. These neurons allow the transmission of signals of stimuli and responses.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) (or visceral nervous system) is the part of the peripheral nervous system that acts as a control system, maintaining homeostasis in the body. These activities are generally performed without conscious control. [1] The ANS affects heart rate, digestion, respiration rate, salivation, perspiration, diameter of the pupils, micturition (urination), and sexual arousal.peripheral nervous systemcontrol systemhomeostasis [1]

Have you ever wanted to run away from something or are you the kind of person who fights back? Well, that is due to the Sympathetic system in your body. It is activated under stress. So, taking that hard math test effects your nervous system too!

What it does: regulates digestive secretions slow the heart constrict the pupils dilate blood vessels.

Alzheimer's Disease Degenerative brain disease Affects memory, thinking, and behavior. Changes your language, decision making ability, judgement, and other mental functions and personality. Can be genetic. Anyone can be diagnosed with Alzheimer's, but the older you are your chances are increased. Risk factors: High Blood Pressure, Head trauma, and having female gender.

Parkinson's Disease Most common form of Parkinsonism, a group of motor system disorders. Slowly Progressive Degenerative Loss of Dopamine producing brain cells Symptoms Tremors-Arms, jaws, face, and legs Stiffness of the body trunk Slowness of movement Impaired balance. Michael J. Fox and Muhammed Ali both suffer from Parkinson’s Disease

Broca Aphasia Affects your speech Doesn't allow you to talk You can understand what words mean, but you wouldn't be able to talk! If your lucky you may be able to write what you want to say, but not in the most severe cases!

Multiple Sclerosis Affects women more than it does men! Onset of the disease is during the ages of 20 to 40. Makes it hard to walk, pick things up, and also to function in everyday life.

Tourette Syndrome Begins in childhood and gets worse the older you get! Tics-irregular movement of head, neck, and shoulders Snorting, Sniffing, Involuntary vocalization

Effects of Alcohol Alcohol can lead to alcoholism which can trigger severe depression. 100,000 Americans die each year from alcohol related accidents. Parental drinking boosts the possibility of teen drinking.

Effects of Drugs Spontaneous heart rate Amphetamines block transporters causing dopamine to in the synapses High levels of dopamine cause pleasurable effects Suppressed appetite and rapid weight loss Commonly used drugs

Muscle Jerks Drowsiness Pupil Dilation Increased Body temperature
