Starting, Moving, and Stopping the Vehicle Chapter 4 Starting, Moving, and Stopping the Vehicle

Starting the Engine Check/set parking brake as appropriate Place foot on brake pedal Shift lever to Park or Neutral Set choke if not Electronic Fuel Injection Turn ignition to ON position Check Gauges Adjust Heating/Ventilation/Air-Conditioning

Starting the Engine Set accessories, as appropriate Turn on headlights if no Daytime Running Lights Allow 15 to 20 seconds engine warm up

Entering the Roadway Press firmly on brake pedal Shift to appropriate gear Forward Reverse Signal as appropriate With foot on brake, release parking brake Select appropriate gap in traffic flow

Entering the Roadway Steer to lane Target lane position Release pressure on brake pedal Press accelerator gently Steer to center of lane

You Steer Where You Look Search as far ahead as possible to identify potential conflicts – objects and areas of limited visibility.

You Steer Where You Look Identify objects or conditions that require a response or continuing attention. Identify an alternate path of travel and a stopping zone.

Steering When Space is Limited

Braking and Deceleration At 60 mph, the vehicle covers about 90 feet per second. The car will travel 90 to 135 feet before brake pressure actually is applied

Backing Adjust seat, steering wheel, mirrors as appropriate Fasten and adjust restraint system Place foot on brake pedal Signal intended move Shift to reverse Release parking brake

Backing Re-adjust body position and hand(s) on wheel Turning left/right Moving straight back

Backing Visually target reference point Control speed with light pressure on brake pedal Gentle pressure on accelerator if needed

Backing Steer to reference point Check movement of front of vehicle (front moves opposite direction of turn) Brake to complete stop before looking front and shifting to Drive

Backing Look where you are going

Exiting Traffic to Park at Curb or Road Edge Identify space where you wish to park Check traffic to the rear and sides Signal direction of movement Check side mirror/blind area Release accelerator Use controlled braking to reduce speed

Exiting Traffic to Park at Curb or Road Edge Identify space where you wish to park Check traffic to the rear and sides Signal direction of movement Check side mirror/bind area Release accelerator Use controlled braking to reduce speed

Securing the Vehicle Apply pressure on brake pedal to stop vehicle in a legal parking space Set parking brake Shift gear selector to Park or Neutral (Manual transmission) Close windows if appropriate

Securing the Vehicle Turn off accessories Turn off ignition and remove key Release safety restraints Check mirrors and over shoulder for safe gap in traffic When safe, exit vehicle and lock doors

Chapter Questions Review Power brakes reduce braking effort and stopping distance. When backing the vehicle will go in the direction in which you turn the top of steering wheel. False True

Chapter Questions Review Upon starting the4 engine, when should you release the key? 4. You should place your foot in front of the brake pedal so you can pivot it to the accelerator pedal. As soon as the engine starts. True.

Chapter Questions Review 5. Total stopping time is made up of? All of the above Reaction time Braking time Perception time
