High School Graduation Requirements credits = 18 compulsory + 12 optional 2. Successful completion of the literacy test hours of community involvement

Literacy Test You must pass this test in order to graduate with an OSSD. The test can be written as often as necessary to pass, but it will only be offered once a year. If you have taken the test but have not successfully passed, you qualify to take the literacy course to replace this requirement.

40 Hours of Community Involvement What can you do?  Activities for which you don’t get paid helping at a food bank peer tutoring teaching Sunday school classes coaching a youth soccer team What can’t you do? Not a task you would normally do (chores) or your friend’s chores Not something you do as a leisure activity (choir practice, basketball practice) Can’t take the place of someone who normally gets paid to do this work (McDonalds, babysitting, etc.) “Neighbourly goodwill”

University and College UniversityCollege - Largely theoretical learning - largely hands on learning - larger classes, less teacher - smaller classes interaction - more expensive - less expensive years for undergraduate years for certificate or degree program diploma program  Some collaborative programs are available to get both a diploma and degree.

Choosing Courses…  All students must take a minimum of 6 courses.  Universities look at best 6 grade 12 U or M level courses  Some universities only want two “4M” courses, rest must be “4U”  English ENG4C vs. ENG4U

Looking ahead… Summary of University requirements:  Arts – usually no math – psychology usually requires a math course  Business – a mix – few will allow only 1 math, usually MHF4U; most need 2  Engineering – usually 2 math (often MHF4U and MCV4U, although MDM may be possible)  Science – usually 2 math (often MHF4U and MCV4U)

E-learning on-line course to be taken during a spare course registration begins in April only for courses that are not offered at ESA courses are semestered Semester 1 : end of Sept – end of Jan Semester 2 courses: Feb – Jun students must FIRST register on their own THEN see a guidance counsellor for approval

Virtual School & Summer School  Full credit & remedial courses are available  Summer school info – May 2011  **English will not be available through the TDSB for students with less than 26 credits this year**  Coop summer school – applications are due this month  Must select minimum of 6 courses on myblueprint.ca to qualify

External Music Credits  Grade VII Performance + Grade I Theory = AMX 3M1  Grade VIII Performance + Grade II Theory = AMX 4M1 ** Students may not use more than one Grade 12 music credit in combination with an external credit for their credit count. Bring in exam results to have this credit entered on your transcript.

SAT/ACT  Considering a post-secondary school in the US? You are required to do the SAT or the ACT.  Consider writing this in May/June ‘11 then again in the fall of Grade 12 if necessary.  Visit for more information.
