Innovative Strategies and Initiatives in the age of Globalization 1. Promote strategic partnerships- with matching mission/strengths; for teaching, research, economic engagement 2. Joint Academic programs- creative partnership for joint/dual-degrees 3. Curriculum integration at home- the key strategy for campus globalization for student and faculty global competence

Promote Strategic Partnerships Innovative Strategy 1: Promote Strategic Partnerships Eliminate many inactive/weak MOUs Select major partners with matching strengths/missions in selected regions Develop agreements with multiple colleges Develop meaningful activities for student mobility, faculty research and economic development

Why Strategic Partnerships? Best utilize limited resources Develop long-term bases for faculty/students for global experience Provide on-site services to faculty and students Develop academic curriculum for study abroad in semester/year without delaying graduation Recruit/ increase enrollment of international students Build international outreach /economic development programs for the university and state

Strategic Global Partnerships Virtual Hubs- work and collaborate with strategically selected universities Rental Space – physical rental space for university’s study abroad center for semesters or academic years Branch Campus- physical campus for offering NC State degrees

Example of a Major Partnership- ZHEJIANG UNIVERSITY MOU University level for all opportunities Agreement: Balanced student exchange Agreement: Summer student research program Agreement: 3+1 BS and Masters degree Agreement: G-student research exchanges Agreement: CSC supported PhD students

Study Abroad Programs to China Most at Zhejiang University

Example of a Major Partnership- ZHEJIANG UNIVERSITY Joint faculty appointments for research & grants Graduate research student exchanges China Scholarship Council PhD students Scholarships for NC State students to Zhejiang for BS, MS and PhD

Example: A Joint Academic Program – “3+X BS and Master Combo” BS and Master combo –accelerated master program at NC State 3 years in ZJU and 1+ years at NC State Finish graduate courses (30-36 hrs) for a professional master degree in selected fields BS from ZJU and Master from NC State

Benefits of 3+X Combo Program Take advantage of ZJU’s excellent undergraduate education and capture the best students Promote graduate program at NC State, most become PhD students after 1st year No credit transfer or accreditation issues Best value for students/parents (money saving), not typical 2+2 or 3+1 for double BS degrees Mutual benefits and further strengthen the partnership of two universities

Example: Summer Research for Undergraduate Students Summer Programs 2007 : 11 2008: 28 2009: 30 2010: 35 Best way to build strong partnerships – with faculty connections Excellent recruiting for high quality graduate students from the best universities Develop long-term academic and degree programs Develop joint research programs

Example- “3+x” program with National Chiao Tung University BS + Master combo –accelerated master program at NC State 3 years in NCTU and 1 +years at NC State Finish all required graduate courses (30-36 hrs) for a Master degree in selected fields BS from NCTU and Master’s degrees from NC State

NC State University Prague Institute Study abroad center NC State University Prague Institute An initiative by the College of Design- serve as an university study abroad center Prague

Branch Campus in South Korea Academic program planning Facility and financial planning Planning for the approvals

Innovative Strategy 2: Joint & Dual International Degrees Strategic approach for international collaboration in high education Build strong and long-lasting institutional partnerships Promote curriculum integration with global perspectives (complimentary strengths) Engage faculty for global exchange and scholarship

Joint and Dual International Degrees Enhanced learning experience and global competence Produce more degree-seeking students than typical exchange programs Enhanced academic learning with global content and competence for faculty/students Increased cross-cultural and international understanding Value-added and improve students’ employability in globalized economy

Joint vs Dual Degree Programs Collaborative academic degree programs with integrated curriculum by two or more partner universities Joint degree program Complete the specified collaborative academic program and receive only one diploma issued by both universities Dual degree program Complete the collaborative academic program and receive one separate diploma from each of the two universities (“Double” degree programs)

Dual International Degrees @ NC State University NC State implemented 8 dual degree programs in the last 3 years 4 graduate degree programs- 2 Master’s and 2 PhD degrees 2 undergraduate degree programs 2 EU-Atlantis Master’s degrees More are pending

Example: Master of Global Innovation Management NC State MGIM Web Site http://mgt.ncsu.edu/mgim/ A newly proposed dual degree masters program from the NCSU College of Management In conjunction with Universite’ Paul Ce’zanne in France

Example: Dual PhD Degree in Genomics and Biotechnology with SNU Co-Supervision – One joint advising committee with co-chairs (one from each) and faculty advisors from both institutions Credit Transfer - Up to half of the total credits (72) required for the host institution’s degree are transferable from the home institution for an equivalent degree at the host institution Thesis and Defense – both in English Dual PhD in Genomics, 2010 from NC State University and Seoul National University (one international degree)

Curriculum Integration Innovative Strategy 3: Curriculum Integration General Education Programs with the Global Knowledge Co-requisite for all UG students Integration of study abroad in academic curriculum for increasing enrollment Global Perspective Certificate for all undergraduate students

Curriculum Integration General Education Programs NC State revised its campus-wide General Education Program (GEP) to include the Global Knowledge Co-requisite, requiring all UG to take a course that provides instruction and guidance to help students: 1) Compare systematically the ideas, values, images, cultural artifacts, economic structures, technological developments, or attitudes of people from different societies, 2) Identify the historical context of ideas and cultural practices and their dynamic relations to other historical contexts; and 3) Explain how a culture changes in response to internal and external pressures.

Curriculum Integration Increase Study Abroad Enrollment Work with college/department to fit SA in the curriculum Make progress without delaying the graduation Gain a competitive edge in today’s global job market Have a positive impact on current world issues Learned through focus groups, surveys, advising sessions

Global Perspectives Certificate Curricular Integration Global Perspectives Certificate University-wide certificate for all students Require 4 components: Academic Coursework International Experience Co-curricular and Service Activities Final Project Official certificate on transcripts for global job competitiveness

NC State Study Abroad Program Increased Study Abroad Enrollment Increased # in last few years & up to 17% of UG study abroad before graduation
