What is language proficiency? It’s not about passing a test or getting the right answer. It’s about what students CAN DO with the language: their ability to use a language for a variety of purposes, including speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Proficiency is commonly measured using guidelines developed by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).
