DESIGNING AND BUILDING A PROJECT By Dr. Kenneth Holmes

All PROJECTS FOLLOW A SIMILAR PATTERN  Weather it is a piece of artwork made on the forge

Con’t  Or a large wind machine

Con’t  Maybe is a whole new system such as this Biomass project.  They all require a procedure

REVIEW OF BUILDING A PROJECT made of metal  Idea  Sketch  Measurements  Material list  Layout  Type of joints  Cutting & drilling  Gluing

REVIEWING A PROJECT MADE OF METAL  Idea  Sketch  Measurements  Material lists  Layouts  Types of welds and joints  Finishing and polishing

For example: BUILDING A ZEN CHAIR  This is a creative project to build a small chair that sits 10” off the ground.  It needs to hold a pillow.  It needs some artistic style.

RESOURCES  Pictures  Tools  Sketches  Idea exchange

TOOLS HammersScrewdrivers MalletsPunches CuttersShears Welding machinesDrills Measuring toolsDrill bits Clamps

TYPES OF JOINTS  Butt  Tee  Lap

CUTTING AND DRILLING  Jig saw  Band saw  Electric hand drill  Drill press  Twist bits  Starting holes

PARTS LIST

Project: small jewelry box  No more than 4” x 4” x 4”  Made from scrap materials

STEP #1: DRAWINGS  Make a 3 view drawing and add the measurements to it  Have it checked  Make a three view drawing complete with measurements  Have it checked

STEP #2:MAKE A MATERIAL LIST  Top piece  Bottom piece  Side rails  Side rails for drawer  Back rail for drawer  Bottom for drawer

STEP #3: LAYOUT AND CUTTING  Obtain the materials  Layout and identify the pieces  Cut them and assemble them  Have it checked  Weld or braze

STEP #4: FINISHING  Grinding  Buffing  Painting

ALL PROJECTS FOLLOW A SIMILAR PROCEDURE  First create an idea book  Then take pictures of things you like  Or go on the website to get ideas  Once you have the idea go and start with Step #1  Step #1: Create drawings and sketches  Step #2: From these drawings make ketches or drawings, for parts, then make material list

Cont.  Step #3: Plan your layout and building ideas  Step #4: Finishing

ASSIGNMENT  Look over the next few pictures and choose a metal project  Make a diagram and sketch complete with measurements  Make a material list  Get the materials  Get the tools and build the project

The end
