Persuasive Writing 4 th Grade- Mrs. Green How to complete a persuasive writing!

Persuasive Writing PROMPT: Saraland’s mayor is thinking about allowing families to have any type of animal as a house pet and grant them permission to roam the streets and other public places. He wants to see if this new freedom makes our city a happier place. Do you agree or disagree with this privilege? Write a persuasive letter to the Saraland City Council stating your opinion and explaining why you feel this way. Use what you have learned in science about animals and their variety of adaptations and behaviors to give convincing reasons and/or specific examples.

Persuasive Writing Think about what the prompt is asking you…Do you agree or disagree with the mayor’s new decision? Your opinion is the topic of your writing. The topic of your writing is your rectangle

Persuasive Writing Do you agree or disagree with the mayor’s new decision? Disagree

Persuasive Writing The next step in completing your outline is to complete your triangles. Your triangles are the 3 different reasons for your opinion. Be sure to always begin triangle paragraphs with transition words such as first, second, third, next, another, final, last

Possible reasons (triangles) I don’t think any kind of animal should be a house pet roaming the streets and visiting public places. Some animals are dangerous Not all animals could survive in our climate. Our city would be overtaken by animals. There could eventually be more animals than people. Some animals are poisonous to humans. Some people may not know how to properly care for these wild animals.

Persuasive Writing Saraland’s mayor is thinking about allowing families to have any type of animal as a house pet grant them permission to roam the streets and other public places. He wants to see if this new freedom makes our city a happier place. Do you agree or disagree with this privilege? Write a persuasive letter to the Saraland City Council stating your opinion and explaining why you feel this way. Use what you have learned in science class about animals and their variety of adaptations and behaviors to give convincing reasons and/or specific examples to support your opinion. May cause city disruptions dangerous May not get proper care

Persuasive Writing The next step in completing your outline is to complete your circles. 1 st Circle- example; 2 nd Circle-MOPSI example; 3 rd Circle- “Result”

Persuasive Writing The first set of circles must only be about the triangle they are located under. May not get proper care Giraffe needs room to roam with many trees to eat small backyard- like a bull in a china shop*s An animal without proper care can’t live long

Persuasive Writing Some animals are dangerous Poison dart frog is beautiful but poisonous to others Criminal in the night roaming the streets *m People’s health would be in danger

Persuasive Writing May cause city disruptions A boa constrictor is neat, but not on aisle six in Walmart *O Saraland citizens will screech in fear. No location would be safe.

Good writers always begin their writing with a well organized outline! AHHHHH…Saraland will be a ZOO!

Persuasive Writing: Introduction 1 st Sentence: Hook Dear City Council Members, How do you feel about exotic animals of all types roaming the streets of Saraland?. 2 nd Sentence: Statement or answer to the Hook using your topic (rectangle) Well I disagree with the mayor’s new decision to allow this to happen 3 rd Sentence: Sentence about your topic (include your 3 triangles : reasons) I don’t agree with this new privilege because the animals may not get proper care, many animals are very dangerous, and all the different animals could cause major disruptions in our city. 4 th Sentence:MOPSI sentence about the topic (rectangle) Animals of all kinds would rob our quiet town of its calm streets and safe neighborhoods. 5 th Sentence: Convincing statement about the topic Please consider the happiness of all city citizens when you are given the job of voting for this ridiculous new freedom.

Persuasive Writing: Introduction (1 st Paragraph) Dear City Council Members, How do you feel about exotic animals of all types roaming the streets of Saraland? Well I disagree with the mayor’s new decision to allow this to happen. I don’t agree with this new privilege because the animals may not get proper care, many animals are very dangerous, and all the different animals could cause major disruptions in our city. Animals of all kinds would rob our quiet town of its calm streets and safe neighborhoods. Please consider the happiness of all city citizens when you are given the job of voting for this ridiculous new freedom.

Persuasive Writing: 1 st Triangle 1 st Sentence: Should be your reason, and should start with “One reason” or “The first reason” The first reason why I don’t think Saraland citizens should be free to have any animal as a pet is because without in depth knowledge of exotic animals’ need, the animals may not receive proper care. 2 nd Sentence: Circle-example For example, a giraffe needs wide open space to roam and lots of trees to eat, which isn’t normally found in a typical Saraland backyard. 3 rd Sentence: Circle-MOPSI example A giraffe living in a backyard with other items like a swing set, trampoline, or swimming pool would be as destructive as a bull in a china shop. 4 th Sentence: Circle- “What would be the result?” An animal’s longevity would be greatly shortened by lack of proper care.

Persuasive Writing: 1 st Triangle Paragraph ( 2nd Paragraph) The first reason why I don’t think Saraland citizens should be free to have any animal as a pet is because without in depth knowledge of exotic animals’ need, the animals may not receive proper care. An animal’s longevity would be greatly shortened by lack of proper car

Persuasive Writing: 2 nd Triangle 1 st Sentence: Should be your reason, and should start with “Another reason” or “The next reason” The next reason I don’t think Saraland citizens should be free to have any animal as a pet is because there are many animals that are dangerous to humans. 2 nd Sentence: Circle-example For example, the poison dart from is beautiful, intriguing, and seems harmless, but in fact it is extremely poisonous. 3 rd Sentence: Circle-MOPSI example This deadly animal would be a criminal in the night lurking around the street corner or even down the hallway of your house. 4 th Sentence: Circle- “What would be the result?” With an animal like this as a pet, everyone’s health would be in danger.

Persuasive Writing: 2 nd Triangle Paragraph ( 3rd Paragraph) The next reason I don’t think Saraland citizens should be free to have any animal as a pet is because there are many animals that are dangerous to humans. For example, the poison dart from is beautiful, intriguing, and seems harmless, but in fact it is extremely poisonous. This deadly animal would be a criminal in the night lurking around the street corner or even down the hallway of your house. With an animal like this as a pet, everyone’s health would be in danger.

Persuasive Writing: 3 rd Triangle 1 st Sentence: Should be your reason, and should start with “The final reason” or “The last reason” The final reason I don’t think Saraland citizens should be free to have any animal as a pet is because they may cause disruptions through out our city. 2 nd Sentence: Circle-example For example,a boa constrictor is quite fascinating, but I wouldn’t want to brush shoulders with it on Aisle six in Wal-Mart or trip over it while jogging in the park. 3 rd Sentence: Circle-MOPSI example At the sight of such a dangerous animal, Saraland citizen will screech loudly in sheer terror. 4 th Sentence: Circle- “What would be the result?” With the possibility of any animal roaming around public places in Saraland, no one would feel safe to shop or enjoy what our town has to offer.

Persuasive Writing: 3 rd Triangle Paragraph ( 4th Paragraph) The final reason I don’t think Saraland citizens should be free to have any animal as a pet is because they may cause disruptions through out our city. For example, a boa constrictor is quite fascinating, but I wouldn’t want to brush shoulders with it on Aisle six in Wal-Mart or trip over it while jogging in the park. At the sight of such a dangerous animal, Saraland citizen will screech loudly in sheer terror. With the possibility of any animal roaming around public places in Saraland, no one would feel safe to shop or enjoy what our town has to offer.

Persuasive Writing: Conclusion 1 st Sentence: Write a statement about the topic Saraland is such a wonderful city, so please don’t allow it to be ruined by animals that should not be living in our civilized environment. 2 nd Sentence: List the 3 triangles (reasons) A few reasons for this urgency is the fact that the animals may not get proper care, many animals are very dangerous, and all the different animals could cause major disruptions in our city. 3 rd Sentence: Convincing statement about the topic If you cherish what we have now in the city of Saraland and want to see it prosper, then citizens should be limited on what animals they can have has pets. 4 th Sentence: Another statement about the topic to bring it to a close Dogs, cats, and birds are looking better and better every day!
