Writing Prompt! 9/26/2006 TrackBasketballBaseball SwimmingSoccer Besides being sports, what do all these different sports have in common?

Sports and Physics It’s all about the motion, man

Sports and motion All sports involve some sort of motion Motion is a key point in physics

Sports and motion Describe the motion of a punted football? Horizontal and vertical motion Rises and falls back to earth What is needed to kick a good punt? Correct direction Lots of hang time Is a line drive punt usually good?

Sports and motion Describe the motion of running a race? Usually horizontal In a constant direction What is needed to win a race? Highest speed or velocity Will see this more tomorrow (bring your racing shoes)

Sports and motion What is speed? How fast you are going More scientifically, how much distance you can cover in a specific amount of time What is velocity? Is it the same as speed?

Sports and motion Velocity and speed are very similar and are related. Velocity is speed in a specific direction

Sports and motion For example: A ball may have a speed of 10 m/s but it’s not a velocity unless you know it’s falling at 10 m/s DOWN A car has a speed of 60 mph but it has a velocity of 60 mph NORTH

Sports and motion How do you calculate speed? Average Speed is Distance/Time Does this make sense? –If you can run 20 miles in one hour, your speed is 20 mph

Sports and motion What is the unit for speed and velocity in metric units? Think Distance/Time Distance in metric: meters, m Time in metric is: seconds, s Distance/Time = meters/second (or m/s)

Some Examples Let’s practice What is the speed of a car that drives 10 m in 1 s? 10 m/s!!!

Some Examples How about… What is the speed of a car that drives 20 m in 2 s? 10 m/s!!!

Some Examples How about… What is the speed of a car that drives 20 m in 40 s? 1/2 m/s (or 0.5 m/s)!!!

Fastest Humans The world record is held by Michael Johnson He ran 3 different events with an average speed of m/s … that’s about mph

Fastest Humans Do you think humans will get faster and faster over time? Or will our top speeds just level out? Let’s look at some data
