Fire Safety Training

Staff must know how to respond to a Fire Emergency  Actions to take upon hearing the fire alarm  Actions to take upon discovering a fire  How to control the spread of smoke and fire  Techniques for the evacuation of endangered occupants  Emergency evacuation procedures  Fire suppression techniques

The Fire Alarm System  The Fire Alarm is a TWO stage alarm – the First Stage of the alarm consists of an alert /warning alarm (1 tone) and the Second Stage of the alarm is the evacuation alarm (3 tone)  Upon hearing evacuation alarm, exit building immediately  There is no overhead paging system

Upon Hearing the Fire Alarm  Check your area for smoke conditions  Close all doors  Prepare important items for evacuation, eg. coat, car keys, wallet  Follow your Code Captains instructions

Upon Hearing the Fire Alarm  Staff attending meetings will accompany DBCVSRI staff  Confine compartmental movement to a minimum  Stay put unless you hear the evacuation alarm  Stand by and await instructions from Code Captains

Fire and Smoke Spread Quickly REACT Promptly

Upon Discovering a Fire REACT R emove persons in immediate danger if possible E nsure ALL departmental doors are closed A activate the fire alarm system using the nearest pull station C all and report ‘Fire’ and give the exact location T ry to extinguish the fire or concentration on further evacuation

Extremely Toxic Spreads Rapidly Displaces Oxygen People Become:  disoriented  impaired  blinded  confused SMOKE

Smell of Smoke  Call ext and report all unidentifiable and untraceable smells of smoke  If you discover visible smoke or flame this is a fire REACT promptly

ACTIVATE THE FIRE ALARM  Pull the fire alarm  If the alarm does not activate, go to the next fire alarm pull and pull that one  Most important, get the fire alarm activated

When the Fire Alarm System Activates  Locking devices on exit doors release automatically  Air handling systems shut down to control smoke movement  A signal is sent to the Fire Department and Onsite Fire Response Team

Alert Colleagues Fire in Progress  Shout out Code Red and location of fire

Upon Discovering a Fire 1) People Fires People Fires call ) Small Fires After fire is out - remember to report accident to FMO ext and to H&S Coordinator ext

PEOPLE FIRES Stop, Drop and Roll  If you wear glasses, take them off your face  Cover your face with your hands (if possible)  If you are on fire, stop, drop and roll, OTHERS should extinguish fire with blanket and cool person with water

The Fire Triangle All three elements are needed to start a fire. To extinguish a fire, one side must be removed. Oxygen Heat Fuel Chemical Reaction

Types of Fuel Regular Flammables – paper, wood Liquid Flammables – Gasoline, paint thinner Electrical – Anything that is plugged in Metals – Potassium, sodium. Typically found in a lab setting.

Types of Extinguishers Three main types Water (APW) – Class A fires only CO2 – Class B and C fires only Dry Chemical - For ABC or BC fires D class extinguishers are typically specific to the fuel

Using the Extinguisher P.A.S.S. P A S ull the pin im at the base queeze the lever weep from side to side

Leave the building immediately! Shut your office door and take car keys and wallet if possible. Follow Emergency Evacuation Procedures Follow Code Captains Instructions identified by a bright orange vest. Follow their direction and report any pertinent information. Meet at identified evacuation area and report to your Code Captain. Evacuation location – Birge Street Re-Entry is authorized by the Fire Department only and you will hear 3 horn blasts – sounding the ‘all clear’ and re-entry to the building may proceed.
