Tangerine by Edward Bloor Pre-Reading Research

What are muck fires? Muck fires are fires that burn underground. They are started when buried decomposing vegetation is ignited by lightning strikes. Bad smelling Very difficult to extinguish since they begin underground

What is a sinkhole? A low area or hole in the ground that is formed especially when soil and rocks are removed by flowing water Sinkholes may vary in size from 3.3 to 2,000 ft Sinkholes may be formed gradually or suddenly, and are found worldwide.

What are koi? Beautiful Japanese Expensive

What is an IEP? Individualized Education Plans Plans to help Students with disabilities be successful in school

What does “legally blind” mean? Perfect vision= 20/20 Legally blind= 20/200 and Cannot be corrected with Glasses or contacts People who are legally blind are entitled to certain accommodations

What is a solar eclipse? What happens if you look directly into a solar eclipse? Solar Eclipse= when the sun Is completely blocked by the Moon If you look directly into A solar eclipse, your eyes can be severely damaged or you could be blinded

What causes lightning to strike? Within a thundercloud, many small bits of ice (frozen raindrops) bump into each other as they move around in the air. All of those collisions create an electric charge. After a while, the whole cloud fills up with electrical charges. The positive charges or protons form at the top of the cloud and the negative charges or electrons form at the bottom of the cloud. Since opposites attract, that causes a positive charge to build up on the ground beneath the cloud. The grounds electrical charge concentrates around anything that sticks up, such as mountains, people, or single trees. T he charge coming up from these points eventually connects with a charge reaching down from the clouds and - zap - lightning strikes! Ex: Have you ever rubbed your feet across carpet and then touched a metal door handle? If so, then you know that you can get shocked! Lightning works in the same way.

What are lightning rods? A metal rod used to divert lightning from a building, house, etc. safely onto the ground

What is a zombie? Undead being

What does someone with the job of a civil engineer do? Civil engineers design and supervise large construction projects, including roads, buildings, airports, tunnels, dams, bridges, and systems for water supply and sewage treatment.
