Emergency Evacuations - Norristown October 2008

TMD-8303-SA Introduction / Key Topics To provide USM Employees & Management instructional guidance regarding actions to be taken during an Emergency Evacuation. Your life, and the lives of your fellow Employees can depend on how well you react in an emergency.  Importance of Emergency Evacuation  Internal Evacuation (safe areas – i.e., tornado)  External Emergency Evacuation Sites #1 – 4  General guidelines for all to follow  Specific duties for key personnel  Final comments

TMD-8303-SA Internal Evacuation – Safe Areas The “Alarm” for an internal evacuation is a PA announcement telling everyone to go to a safe area (marked in green on site maps). The internal evacuation is used primarily for a severe weather event (i.e. tornado) or other external emergency.  Proceed quickly & safely to the nearest internal safe area  Close all doors – don’t go outside  Stay away from windows & glass  An internal evacuation generally lasts for only minutes or so  Remain in your safe area until a PA announcement states that it is safe to return to your work area  We do not take a headcount or roll-call during an internal evacuation

TMD-8303-SA External Evacuations There are audible alarms with a light that will flash during an emergency – external evacuation Your training & drills will help you know what action to take - preparedness wards off panic Evacuation diagrams are located throughout the facility

TMD-8303-SA If you see a fire/emergency Go to the nearest fire pull box and/or call Receptionist – “0”

TMD-8303-SA Evacuation Sites & Safe Areas 1st Floor

TMD-8303-SA Evacuation Sites & Safe Areas 2nd Floor

TMD-8303-SA General Instructions for all - DO  If you see an Emergency (fire), Call Receptionist “0”, and pull alarm if one is nearby (at most exit doors)  When alarm is sounded, you must evacuate promptly and safely through nearest exit  Report to your designated Emergency Evacuation Site, if not possible, to the nearest evacuation site – be sure to let the site leader know if this is not your designated site  Report immediately to the Supervisor or other designated person that is running your site  Assist the Supervisor by helping to coordinate efforts, keep persons in the area, and collect information  Remain calm throughout, take your instructions from your Supervisor, and be patient

TMD-8303-SA General Instructions for all - DON’T DON’T  PANIC  Go to get your coat, purse, friend, store items, laptop, etc; none of them are worth losing your life over  Leave the Emergency Evacuation Site to: eat, sit in your car, smoke a cigarette, buy a newspaper, etc.  Assume that the person running your site knows you are there  Re-enter the building until given the all clear  Fight the fire unless it is small, and you are trained in the use of a nearby extinguisher  Use the elevator in a fire

TMD-8303-SA Key Personnel Responsibilities VP-HSE, Facilities Manager, and/or Senior Manager on site  Check validity of alarm if possible  Assist the evacuation efforts  Meet Emergency Response Persons as they arrive and provide them all pertinent information  Determine when “all clear” signal is to be given to end drill Department Managers & Supervisors  Direct Employees to nearest exits  Make final sweep/check of area, including restrooms, cafes, conference rooms, etc. if safety will allow it  Close doors & windows if safety allows  Help to signal “all clear” when it is given at end of event

TMD-8303-SA Key Personnel Responsibilities Emergency Evacuation Site Leaders & Co-Leaders  Assume lead duties at Evacuation sites – first one out  Take Emergency Packs to each evacuation site  Organizing personnel at site  Reporting of absentees via radio Fire Wardens & Co-Wardens  Direct Employees to nearest exits – last one out  Make final sweep/check of area, including restrooms, cafes, conference rooms, etc. if safety will allow it  Close doors & windows if safety allows  Report in to site leader that your area has evacuated  Report any issues via radio

TMD-8303-SA Final Comments  If you are out of your work area, report to the nearest assembly area. If you are not sure where to go, ask someone. Just make sure that when you hear a fire alarm, leave the building.  Evacuate immediately through nearest exit, report in to the Site leader & follow instructions - make sure you are accounted for especially if not in designated evacuation site  Be aware of traffic, and stay away from the building – stay in your area  Stay calm & patient  Do not return into the building until you have been told to do so (by management)

TMD-8303-SA Summary In an emergency, evacuate to the proper assembly area and report to your supervisor. Be aware of traffic & stay away from the building. Stay calm & patient, and don’t return to the building unless instructed. Remember, your life and the lives of your fellow Employees may depend on how well you react.
