Fire extinguisher Training

COURSE TITLE:FIRE EXTINGUISHER SAFETY AWARENESS Venue: Fire /Safety classroom – Fire training ground. Duration : 4 Hours Classroom lesson – Duration – 2 hours  Details of training:  Self introduction of instructor and participation of the attendees.  Introduction of the Subject.  Explain the training course objectives.  Explain contents of each slides shown on the screen ( hard copy attached).  Show movie, fighting fire with fire extinguisher, duration 20 minutes.  Brief discussion about lesson learned from the movie.  Break time ( 10 minutes)

COURSE TITLE:FIRE EXTINGUISHER SAFETY AWARENESS (Cont.) Fire training ground – Duration- 2 hours  After asking permission from U&O to utilize the fire training ground, the Fire Technician will:  Connect the 1.5”x100 ft hose line with nozzle from the fire hydrants as stand by.  Fill drip pan size 1.5 sq/m by 6” high with 1/3 water &1/3 fuel (gasoline).  Ignite the fuel using 8 ft long torch.  The instructor will demonstrate how to properly operate and safely use the fire extinguisher (ABC cartridge type) in extinguishing the fire.  Each participant will practically demonstrate, suppressing the fire using the fire extinguisher.  Brief discussion about the used of fire extinguisher( inside classroom).  Fill up course evaluation form ( attached).  Training completed / keep record of attendance.

Fire Extinguisher Awareness Training  Course Objectives:  To Identify different types of fire.  Identify the extinguishing Methods.  Knowing the different types of fire extinguishers & what types of fires it is effective.  Proper Handling and safe use of fire extinguisher in suppressing fire.  Understanding the basic first Response techniques.  Be aware of the capabilities and limitations of fire extinguisher.

Fire Extinguisher Types_____ PRESSURIZED WATER Class “A” fires only. 2.5 gal. water at psi (up to 1 minute discharge time). Has pressure gauge to allow visual capacity check ft. maximum effective range. Can be started and stopped as necessary. coolingExtinguishes by cooling burning material below the ignition point.

Fire Extinguisher Types (cont.) CARBON DIOXIDE (CO 2 ) Class “B” or “C” fires lb. of CO 2 gas at psi (8-30 seconds discharge time). NO Has NO pressure gauge-- capacity verified by weight. 3-8 ft. maximum effective range. smotheringExtinguishes by smothering burning materials. decreasesEffectiveness decreases as temperature of burning material increases.

Fire Extinguisher Types (cont.) DRY CHEMICAL Class “B”, or “C” fires. 30 lb. dry chemical (ammonium phosphate) pressurized with CO2 gas cartridge and wheeled extinguishers are pressurized with nitrogen cartridge. (8-25 seconds discharge time) ft. maximum effective range. smotheringExtinguishes by smothering burning materials. C. Electrical B Liquid, Grease

Fire Extinguisher Types (cont.) MULTIPURPOSE DRY CHEMICAL Class “A”, “B”, or “C” fires lb. dry chemical (mono ammonium phosphate) pressurized with CO2 gas cartridge and wheeled extinguishers are pressurized with nitrogen cartridge. (8-25 seconds discharge time) ft. maximum effective range. smotheringExtinguishes by smothering burning materials.

Fire Extinguisher Types (cont.) DRY POWDER DRY POWDER Class “D” combustible metal fires only. 30 lb. pressurized dry powder optimized for specific combustible metal (also available in bulk containers for hand scooping onto fire to extinguish). 4-6 ft. maximum effective range. To activate, must first open CO2 cylinder cartridge on back to pressurize body.(28-30 seconds discharge time) smotheringExtinguishes by smothering burning materials. D D COMBUSTIBLE METALS

Fire Extinguisher Types (cont.) WET CHEMICAL C Electrical Equipment Class “A”, “C”, and “K” fires. 1.5 gal. of stored pressure PRX wet chemical extinguishing agent (40 sec. discharge time) ft. maximum effective range. after On Class “K” fires, don’t use until after fixed extinguishing system has activated. cooling Extinguishes by cooling and forming foam blanket to prevent reigniting. Fire Emergency Response R A C E Rescue Alarm Contain Extinguish

Firefighting Decision Criteria KnowKnow department emergency procedures and evacuation routes. KnowKnow locations of extinguishers in your area and how to use them. Alwaysregardless Always sound the alarm regardless of fire size. Avoid Avoid smoky conditions. Ensure Ensure area is evacuated. Don’t Don’t attempt to fight unless: - Alarm is sounded. - Fire is small and contained. - You have safe egress route (can be reached without exposure to fire). - Available extinguishers are rated for size and type of fire. evacuate! If in doubt, evacuate!
