Make-up Assessments No make-up quizzes or exams will be given, except under prearranged or special circumstances.

Late Assignmnets Assignments turned in late will be marked down 10% per day.

Lecture Material Lecture material will be presented in the form of PowerPoint lecture notes, class activities, and online class discussion. You will find the Power Point lecture notes on the course web page.

Laboratory Notebook Serves as your record of events that occurred in the microbiology lab. For those students going into an Allied Health field, the laboratory notebook will help you develop organizational skills that will be necessary when documenting patient records. Laboratory Notebooks will be graded for their completeness, accuracy and neatness.

Disease Presentation and Mystery Microbe Projects Individuals or pairs of students will investigate current literature and websites about a variety of diseases. The Mystery Microbe Project (MM project) is a way for you to become a microbe detective More on this later

Midterms Midterms will take place at the beginning of class. If you are late to a test you will be given the remaining time given to all students to finish the exam. EX: If the exam is 1 hour and you come in 30 min into the exam you will be given the remaining 30 min to finish the test. In the form of short answer, multiple choice, true/false, short essay, long essay and case study questions

Final Exam Like the midterms the final will also be a printed, hard copy exam. Cumulative A cumulative final allows you to review the class material and further store concepts into your long term memory. You will be allowed to bring a "reference sheet" consisting of a single sided 8.5 x 11 in.

How Much Time do I need to Dedicate to Micro? Be prepared to spend at least 2 hours outside of class for every hour inside of class. You will be in class 6 hours a week and expected to study at least 12 more hours during the week.

Lab Safety

Safety Statement Do not eat, drink or smoke in the microbiology lab. Note locations of the first aid kit, eye wash stations and gas shut-off valve. Store books and personal items in the cubbies at the end of each bench. The cubbies are much cleaner than the floor and help to keep your benchtop free of everything except your lab notebook and writing instrument.

Safety Statement Secure long hair, beards and anything else that may dangle to prevent a fire or contamination. Please wear only closed toed shoes to lab. Beware of flaming Bunsen burners, contaminated materials and test tube racks. It is easy to inadvertently reach over a culture or burner and cause a problem. Be especially mindful of the Bunsen burners since the flames are hard to see. Make sure to extinguish them when not in use.

Safety Statement In the event of a fire, please help to turn off the master gas-valve located in the front instructor’s cabinet. It is off when the lever is perpendicular to the line. (We haven’t had any fires yet, so please help to keep the fire free streak going.) If the fire is serious, don’t forget to call campus security ( ) or 911. In the event of chemical or microbial contact, wash the skin with soap and water; flush the eyes with water; notify your instructor.

Safety Statement Report accidents and/or spills immediately. Wear a lab coat or apron and/or glasses or goggles when necessary. Follow aseptic procedures: – Disinfect all work surfaces before AND after use – Flame wire inoculating loops prior to AND after use. – Keep all microbiological cultures and plates closed when they are not in active use to prevent contamination.

Safety Statement Dispose of all materials as directed by instructor. – Test-tubes  test-tube rack labeled AUTOCLAVE – Agar plates  metal canister for plates labeled AUTOCLAVE – Slides or swabs  10% bleach in beakers – All contaminated items will be autoclaved before they are disposed. – If you have any doubt of how to dispose of an item, PLEASE ASK.

Safety Statement Dispose of broken glassware in the labeled containers in the front or back of the lab. Do not take any materials or cultures from the lab. Do not perform any unauthorized or unsupervised experiments. Children are not permitted in the microbiology lab. Before leaving the laboratory at the end of the period, wash your hands with soap and water.
