University of Illinois at Chicago Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) Image Based Rendering with Stable Frame Rates by Qu, et al. IEEE 2000 presentation by Nicholas Schwarz Electronic Visualization Lab University of Illinois at Chicago

Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) Introduction Voxel-based terrain rendering system. Keyframeless image-based renderer. Uses 3D warp algorithms and ray-casting. Offset buffer used to keep track of pixel locations. Age buffer used to record age of pixels for load balancing.

University of Illinois at Chicago Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) Keyframe Technique Render keyframe and warp. Fill in holes by ray- casting. Rerender keyframe when error exceeds threshold. Warped frame based on original.

University of Illinois at Chicago Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) Keyframeless Technique Initial render via ray- casting. Offset buffer records exact positions of pixels warped from previous image. McMillan and Bishop’s 3D warp algorithm

University of Illinois at Chicago Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) Keyframeless Technique Each pixel has an age buffer. Age = 0: ray-cast Age++ every warp Age exceeds threshold: rerender Load balancing by adjusting threshold

University of Illinois at Chicago Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) Keyframeless Technique Fill in holes by ray- casting. Utilize terrain coherence.
