European Convention on Human Rights Article 6 3. Everyone charged with a criminal offence has the following minimum rights: (a) to be informed promptly, in a language which he understands and in detail, of the nature and cause of the accusation against him;.... (e) to have the free assistance of an interpreter if he cannot understand or speak the language used in court.

Objective Provide an opportunity for translators, interpreters, lawyers and other candidates with necessary skills to qualify as sworn interpreters from and into German, especially with languages of lesser diffusion

Structure Part-time further education, maximum 26 participants, 7 language groups 10 months (October – July) 141 teaching hours in class 300 hours self study 9 weekend seminars 1 weekend examinations

Legal curriculum Detailed introduction to legal and official procedures: legal institutions introduction to criminal law, criminal procedure, civil law, civil procedure (commercial law, corporate structures), administrative law and related subjects (law concerning foreign nationals) police work expert advisory services registrar and notarial functions

Translation and interpreting Interpreting and translating techniques: professional ethics communication at court sight translation sight interpretation note-taking consecutive interpreting with/without notes simultaneous and whispering interpreting legal document translation

Examinations conformity with §§ 6, 7 HmbDolm-VO recognition by Department of the Interior corresponding to 14 points European Credit Transfer System

Written examination 5 hours 3 texts from German into working language 3 texts from working language into German official legal document (20 lines per language) text relating to criminal law (30 lines per language) text relating to civil law (30 lines per language)

Oral examination Approximately 1 hour in total Part 1 Legal subjects Candidates must demonstrate a knowledge of the institutions of the German legal system (courts and authorities), that they have studied judicial institutions and procedures and that they are able to convey legal content into their working language.

Oral examination Part 2 Interpreting sight translation from German into the working language and vice versa consecutive interpreting from and into German simultaneous interpreting (whispering) from and into German
