Warm Up 3/7/14 1. What did the Rural Electrification Act do? 2. What did the Civilian Conservation Corporation (CCC) do? 3. What caused the US’s entry into World War II?

1. What did the Rural Electrification Act do? Provided rural areas with cheap electricity.

2. What did the Civilian Conservation Corporation (CCC) do? Provided jobs to young, single men. They worked on public service projects. ( building roads, trails, parks, planting trees, and control flooding )

3. What caused the US’s entry into World War II? The attack on Pearl Harbor

The New Deal Franklin D. Roosevelt is elected president- “promises new deal for the American people” New Deal- series of laws that were designed to:  Promote economic recovery  Relieve the suffering of the unemployed  Reform defects in the economy  Improve society

CCC – Civilian Conservation Corps Created in 1932 It provided jobs for young, single men building roads, trails, parks, planting trees, and control flooding Helped address joblessness amongst young, single men Popular in GA Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, FDR State Park, St. Simons Airport, and many other projects throughout GA

Created in 1933 Farmers continued to grow crops such as cotton during the Depression, which made these prices of these items go down. The federal government offered to pay farmers not to grow the crops. This caused prices to rise- farmers were able to make money and eliminated having a surplus. Hurt Tenant Farmers- they did not receive the money, and instead it went to the land owner. AAA – Agricultural Adjustment Act

REA - Rural Electrification Authority Created in 1935 It provided power to rural areas at a discounted rate. One of the most important and far-reaching New Deal programs It was needed b/c rural Americans could not afford electricity _Rural-Electrification- Administration- REA_transformers_cooking- range_refrigerator

SSA - Social Security Administration Created in 1935 Provided retirement and unemployment insurance from taxes paid by both workers and employers. It also gave assistance to the blind, the elderly, the disabled, and widows w/ children.  Drawback: Farmers not covered It was needed because so many Americans were plunged into poverty, unable to find work, & the elderly were without savings & unable to work.

GOVERNOR Eugene Talmadge Conservative GA politician and white supremacist Took a stump around with him and stood on it to deliver fiery speeches He wanted to balance the state budget. He made decisions which also hurt the state. He did not like the New Deal- especially anything which gave aid to African Americans. He forced the removal of 2 UGA faculty members for supporting integration.

Lend-Lease Act What was the Lend-Lease Act and how did it benefit both the Allies and the U.S.?  Passed by Congress in February of 1941 and signed into law by Roosevelt in March  U.S. sent billions of dollars worth of supplies and military equipment to the United Kingdom, France, the Soviet Union, and China and these countries gave the U.S. base rights in their military bases
