1. What did the Rural Electrification Act do? Provided rural areas with cheap electricity.
2. What did the Civilian Conservation Corporation (CCC) do? Provided jobs to young, single men. They worked on public service projects. ( building roads, trails, parks, planting trees, and control flooding )

CCC – Civilian Conservation Corps Created in 1932 It provided jobs for young, single men building roads, trails, parks, planting trees, and control flooding Helped address joblessness amongst young, single men Popular in GA Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, FDR State Park, St. Simons Airport, and many other projects throughout GA
Created in 1933 Farmers continued to grow crops such as cotton during the Depression, which made these prices of these items go down. The federal government offered to pay farmers not to grow the crops. This caused prices to rise- farmers were able to make money and eliminated having a surplus. Hurt Tenant Farmers- they did not receive the money, and instead it went to the land owner. AAA – Agricultural Adjustment Act
REA - Rural Electrification Authority Created in 1935 It provided power to rural areas at a discounted rate. SSA - Social Security Administration Created in 1935 Provided retirement and unemployment insurance from taxes paid by both workers and employers. It also gave assistance to the blind, the elderly, the disabled, and widows w/ children. Drawback: Farmers not covered It was needed because so many Americans were plunged into poverty, unable to find work, & the elderly were without savings & unable to work.
GOVERNOR Eugene Talmadge Conservative GA politician and white supremacist Took a stump around with him and stood on it to deliver fiery speeches He wanted to balance the state budget. He made decisions which also hurt the state. He did not like the New Deal- especially anything which gave aid to African Americans. He forced the removal of 2 UGA faculty members for supporting integration.

On December 7, 1941, over 300 Japanese planes surprise attacked the Navy base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii killing over 2000 Americans and destroying over 150 U.S. ships Changed the vast majority of opinion about staying out of the war U.S. declared war on Japan on December 8, 1941 Germany and Italy declared war on the U.S. and then the U.S. declared war on Germany and Italy

Produced over 650 B-29 bombers (America’s most technologically advanced bomber of the war) Employed almost 30,000 people, many from Georgia (In 1951, the Lockheed Martin Company took over the facility that continues to employ Georgians today)
