Extreme Weather Modeling a Strong Lesson Using Google Earth and Weather Apps iLearn Science Session 5

Focusing Questions What does a strong lesson using Google Weather Apps and Layers look like? How can I use Google Weather Apps and Layers to create my own strong lesson?

Instruction

Framing The Session In this session, participants see a lesson using Google Earth and Weather Apps and Layers. After seeing the lesson modeled, they will create their own strong lesson using Google Earth and Weather Apps and Layers.

Teaching First thing we have to do is make sure that all our Apps and layers are turned off, so go into your task panes and make sure that nothing is turned on.

Turning on Weather Apps and Layers Time to turn on some Weather Apps First in the Weather Apps folder turn on the European Real-Time Lightning Strike Ap

Turning on Weather Apps and Layers Now in the Layers section, turn on the Populated Places layer

Open Your Double Entry Weather Document From the resource list, open the Double Entry Weather Document for documenting your observations and predictions

First Entry – Modeling the Minilesson Look at the active weather Apps and the lightning layer. What do you notice? What do you think?

Data Entry – Guided Practice Open “Predicting Weather Document” Complete the first row of observations

Second Entry – Independent Practice/ Conferring Turn on the Global Cloud Map application. What do you notice? Make your observations and predictions.

Third Entry – Independent Practice/ Conferring Turn on the World Metar's Tool. Record new observations and predictions.

Third Entry Look at the METAR's Legend Locate one of the weather information updates. What does information tell you? What can you deduce from this information?

Guided Practice Look at the sample lesson’s actual lesson plan. What would work well with a real class of 6th graders? What would you change? What parts of this lesson plan template would you like to use? What will you add to/change about this lesson plan template?

Work Time

Start thinking about your own lesson. Use the skills taught in the past sessions to start working on your own "strong lesson" using Google Earth and Weather Apps.

Work Time Continued Step 1 – Review Lesson Ideas Gathered Step 2 – Review Tools and Applications covered in previous lessons Step 3 - Create a Strong Lesson using Google Earth and Weather Apps

Share

Today we learned how to use Google Earth and Weather Apps and Layers to teach a strong science lesson. You then used the modeled lesson to develop and create your own strong science lesson. Let’s look at some of the strong science lessons you created today. Share

What does a strong science lesson using Google Weather Apps look like? How can you use Google Weather Apps to teach an inquiry based lesson? Do you see any potential problems? Share

How does this work address the questions that began the session? Answers
