A Nation wide GIS Training Project Background, Scope, Tasks, Project Organisation and Performance

The Tasks

The Task for Phase 1 The Regional Governments should arrange a general GIS-training program aiming to support the societal planning process The Target Group – politicians and senior officials in cities, municipalities etc. Objective – to initiate ideas how to utilise the GIS technology To promote the PilotGIS-standard for societal planning information

The Task for Phase 1 (contd.) The Regional Government in Västra Götaland has the co-ordination role and is responsible for deploying funds. Phase 1 is supposed to be completed with the end of 1999 Governmental funding 7M SEK – additional regional and local funding is necessary

The Task for Phase 2 The Regional Governments should arrange a GIO training program aiming to meet the needs for comprehensive GIS knowledge within cities, municipalities and within the regional government administrations To deploy individuals for The Target Group – the GIOs supposed to be responsible for GIS activities To promote local development processes concerning development and implementation of GIS within the organisations To promote intensified build up of data sets with geographic data

The Task for Phase 2 (contd.) The training should be arranged in co-operation with the regional GIS associations and other players on the GIS arena The different prerequisites in the different regions should be considered during the planning and performance The Regional Government in Västra Götaland has the co- ordination role and is responsible for deploying funds. Phase 2 is supposed to be completed with the end of 2000 Governmental funding 6M SEK – additional regional and local funding is necessary

The Task for Phase 3 Local training activities with the end users as the target group Two levels of users – advanced users and browsing users (viewer users) Establishment of GIS as a wide-spread asset in the daily work Establishment of widely used data bases

The Task for Phase 3 (contd.) The training should be arranged in co-operation with the regional GIS associations and other actors on the GIS arena Governmental funding 8.5 m SEK – additional regional and local funding necessary Phase 3 is supposed to be completed with the end of 2001
