Web 2.0 is interactive and engaging
Why Web 2.0 – iGeneration, Gen-Y, Screenagers Search tendencies – all about fortuitous searching – Very haphazard – Often too broad or too narrow – Last minute- not enough time to do it right
The iGen kids almost universally reject text heavy directions – They literally look to the images first for context They will spend 20,000 hours on the web (87, Ferritier) – Gaming, YouTube » 20 Hours of new content is uploaded to YouTube servers EVERY MINUTE » We’re dealing with an explosion of visual content
The answer is – We can’t afford not to meet the kids where they are… Use portals that they can relate to— – Social media platforms (Edmodo, Edublogs, Collaborize Classroom, etc.)
More reasons to choose Web 2.0 Online forums give kids opportunities to participate – Earn intellectual recognition for 1 st time Edit thoughts before posting= less ridicule Challenge their thinking- leads to higher order thinking
Presentation Fun Amazing options for creating presentations and projects – Prezi – Glogster – Animoto – Blabberize – Xtranormal – Voicethread, GarageBand, Audacity, Voki Voki– create and animate avatars & more
Search Tools Google Wonder Wheel (RIP) Alternatives: – Quintara (English and Russian versions) – Visual Thesaurus - requires subscription – Google Trends Correlate (Google labs grad) – No fancy interface, yet has tons of features to discover
More Search Helpers helps organize links or mind mapping (free demo) free, simple visual help to hone keywords/search terms Feed Readers ( – Consume info more efficiently – Constantly updates – Automates the process – Increased accuracy
