SAINT GEORGE SFANTUL GHEORGHE 23 of April

St. George is, for Christians, Feast of military Martyr, who was tortured and killed for Christ, in the emperor Diocletian time. Bearer of victory, he is considered holy and Orthodox iconography has represented him riding a white horse and slaying a dragon, a symbol of evil.

 In the folk calendar, the celebration is found with name "Sangeorz". It coincides with the triumph of spring, the delicate period of life of the agricole cultures, when they are threatened by the "ghosts of food". Therefore, various rituals are made for defense against ghosts, like fires on the hills.

Young women and girls brings in houses plants like basil as it smells nice, good love basil, thought the peasants. Girls are watered/sprinkled by young men.

In communities now has engaged shepherds, guards and servants at the sheepfold. Sheep of the peasants are gathered and put into the care of a shepherd who will leave with them in the mountains till fall. Every village celebrates with a big party.

Army Day Feast of St Great Martyr George, once a protector of the infantry, now enshrined as the patron saint of the most comprehensive and representative groups of the Romanian Army forces-the land forces, made April 23 is celebrated as Army Day. The tradition of honoring the Holy Great Martyr George as patron of the Army stems from his courage, strength and his faith. In Brasov, this day has been celebrated by an military exhibition. Dozens of curious gathered to admire the armored vehicles, weapons, camouflage outfits, and the specific equipment of military climbers. The most excited have been the children, who crowded themselves to see the weapons and war machines, and made pictures and took dozens of questions
