Presentation transcript:

Farm Stress Karen Mastronardi April 1, 2008 Oklahoma City, OK

NY FarmNet  Began in response to the “farm crisis” of 1986  Provides 24 hour “warm line”  Financial and/or mental health consultants  On farm consultation  Over 5000 calls in 2007, ½ personal issues  Sponsored and utilized continuing education

NY FarmNet Human Services  Professional Consultants  Similar to an EAP program  50% of calls have a personal aspect  Client centered  Building referral structure

History  During the farm crisis in the 1980’s, farmers experienced extraordinarily higher levels of distress than usual.  The current farm economy is again causing distress levels to increase and farmers need to practice stress management skills routinely and seek assistance if they are having difficulty managing their stress.  Market prices, government regulations, and weather disasters are difficult to control, but farmers do have control over their own behavior.

Documentary Trailer  Coming this Summer to PBS

Stress Stress is a daily part of all our lives.  Actually, “good” stress is quite beneficial to one’s overall health.  It is only when stress is negative (distress) and prolonged or very intense that it takes a toll on health and well- being.

Stress Management  Sleep  Healthy Diet  Exercise  Breaks  Avoiding alcohol and drugs  Talking honestly  Spirituality  Meditation, massage, imagery, etc.

Symptoms of Depression  Sometimes, even with the use of preventive measures, prolonged or acutely intense distress can trigger chemical changes in the body that result the onset of depression. Symptoms of depression may include:  Feelings of sadness, hopelessness or emptiness  Loss of interest in favorite activities  Trouble concentrating or making decisions  Feelings of worthlessness or guilt  Irritability  Thoughts of death or suicide  Fatigue  Sleeping too much or too little  Appetite and/or weight changes  Digestive problems  Aches and pains (particularly in the back and head)  Dizziness

What To Do?  There are effective treatments and therapies that can ease or eliminate the symptoms of depression. It is important to get help if you or someone you know might be depressed. You can call your doctor, local mental health provider or NY FarmNet for assistance or if someone is suicidal call or 911 immediately.
