Cyclist Casualties in West Yorkshire and Leeds Since 2002, the number of pedal cyclist casualties in Leeds has increased constantly, while the figure for the county is fairly flat.

Child Cyclist Casualties in Leeds After a slight drop in 2004, child cyclist casualties have resumed the increase trend started in Killed or Seriously Injuries (KSI) represent around 15% of all casualties

Adult Cyclist Casualties in Leeds Since 2002, the number of adult casualties has increased consistently The slight drop in 2004 is less pronounced compare to child cyclist’s trend

Child cyclists are involving in traffic accident near their residence post code

Adult cyclists tend to get injured at location relatively far from their home; mainly on major roads…

Type of Collision and Critical Manoeuvre Motorists are responsible of the critical manoeuvre prior to accidents in more than 60% of cases Making an improper right turn and colliding with rear of cyclist are the most common manoeuvres causing accident for motorists Cyclists are responsible for less than 40% of accidents, with failing to stop being the most common critical manoeuvre prior to accident

Vehicle Manoeuvre at the Time of Accident 23% of motorist and 41% of cyclist were going ahead other at the time of the collision… …while 10% of motorist and 3% of cyclist were turning right …while 10% of motorist and 3% of cyclist were turning right Parked vehicles were also involved in a relatively important number of collision

Final Words More cyclists were injured following traffic accidents in Leeds since 2002 Adult cyclists are likely to get involved in traffic accidents relatively far from their home residence Child cyclist are likely to be involved in accident close to their home post code

Final Words Motor vehicles turning either right, left or making a u- turn, were the most dangerous manoeuvre for cyclists. Cyclist were mainly hit from behind by motorists Entering main road from pavement without paying much attention has caused lot of cyclist accidents Cyclists especially children going ahead in the traffic were the most vulnerable in the road.
