Major Change since April 2000 – Authority model from [19x] to [7xx]

7XX in MARC 21 – linking for equivalent headings in the same/different database(s) / authority thesaurus(es) 1.In April 2000, based on LC’s advice, Workgroup decided to adopt [7XX]. 2. Because [7XX] field is a standard MARC21 practice & performs the same functions as [19X]

Tag 7XX (Heading linking entries) 3. Repeatable - capable of handling parallel headings in multiple forms / scripts 4. Facilitates sharing & exchanging of authority data on a global scale

Tag 7XX (Heading linking entries) 5. NO requirement for a corresponding authority record for [7XX] heading 6. Supported by III & will be implemented in the New Immediate Release

HKCAN Database setup (1) 1.Database setup – completed in early Jan Duplication removal – carried out by LU in early Feb Database now holds over 30,000 records

HKCAN Database setup (2) 4.Record loading & duplication removal will be completed by the early next year. 5.Entire database will stand over 80,000 records. 6.No. of participants & database’s size will multiply significantly in future.

Future Development Interactive link to library catalogue Cooperation on an international scale 1. Cooperation with National Central Library in Taipei - to exchange for authority data 2. To include authority data created by National Library of China to expand the Database’s coverage.

Conclusion (1) 1.HKCAN Workgroup has made long great strides, & reached new level of achievements since first initiated in Invaluable & unique resource for cataloguing & better service to users of information in Chinese. 3.It is labour intensive, but cost & time will be justified in long run.

Conclusion (2) 4.HKCAN marks the growing strength of cooperative cataloguing in both Hong Kong & overseas libraries. 5.It will make great contribution to authority work & resources development in libraries with Chinese collections around the world.
