Knowledge Management in TENCompetence: concepts & tools Ruud Lemmers – Logica (The Netherlands)

Agenda 1.Linking TENC problems to KM 2.TENC tools related to KM 3.TENC problems – what did we solve? 4.KM implementation background 5.Demo

Linking TENC problems to KM (1/2) 2. Overview Hard to get an overview of all the possible formal and informal knowledge resources … that are available, and to identify the most appropriate for their needs. 3. Sharing The pro-active sharing of knowledge and learning resources is a major problem.

Linking TENC problems to KM (2/2) 4. Assess acquired competences It is still hard to assess the competences of … employees … who have studied and worked in a variety of settings. 5. User support Current … knowledge management environments provide too little effective support to the users in their various tasks.

TENC tools related to KM Competence Editor: data for analysis LearnWeb2.0: knowledge resources TENTube: networks Learning Path Editor Liferay: wiki, message board, content management, blogs, … (Social Help: user support)

TENC problems – what did we solve? 2. Overview LearnWeb, (Liferay) 3. Sharing LearnWeb, TENTube, (Liferay) 4. Assess acquired competences QTI support 5. User support Social Help tool & research

KM implementation background Placed within the imaginary company “MGNR”, which is working in the electronic assembly business. Setup by HR personnel, Business Experts and a System Administrator. The company is in an early phase of their implementation; setup is (almost) complete, use is just starting. Focus on soft skills, not on functional competences.

Why is KM important for MGNR? Derived from the EFQM excellence model: 1.“Are people satisfied and wanting us to do well?” Fostering innovation, developing others, flexibility, decisiveness, etc. increase satisfaction. Motivated colleagues do better and stimulate them to stay. 2.“Are our customers satisfied and using us more?” Knowing how to treat our customers well (and doing so!) helps sales. Rethinking Employment at a time of Economic Uncertainty

Acknowledgement This reference implementation was inspired by and used input from the EPIQ business demonstrator: Competence profiles Competences Sample resources Paper “The TENCompetence EPIQ’s business demonstrator development”, from “Int. J. Cont. Engineering Education and Life-Long Learning, Vol. 19, Nos. 4/5/6” 2009, by Elena Shoikova and Vladislav Denishev.
