About the Professor Ponn Maheswaranathan: B.S (Sri Lanka), M.S & PhD (Purdue University, Indiana), Professor of Physics, Winthrop University. Native of Sri Lanka, Naturalized U.S. citizen. Married to Shyamala (Assistant Kindergarten Teacher, Ebenezer Avenue elementary School, Rock Hill) and have two sons: Mithunan (First year Medical Student at MUSC, Charleston, SC) and Niruban (Senior at Duke University, Durham, NC, Bio-Medical Engineering major).

The Scientific Enterprise A scientific meeting, communication, and debate are important to the development of scientific explanations.

Steps in the Scientific Method 1. Observation 2. Formulation of Rules 3. Development of Hypothesis, Theory 4. Testing of the hypothesis or theories by further observation

Physics Physics is the study of the laws of nature that govern the behaviour of the universe, from the very smallest scales of sub-atomic particles to the very largest in cosmology. It applies these laws to the solution of practical problems and to the development of new technologies. Physics can be divided into classical physics and modern physics. Classical Physics: Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Electricity and Magnetism, and Optics. Modern Physics: Atomic physics, Nuclear Physics, Particle physics, and Condensed-Matter physics. /which-science-is-the-most-fundamental/

Measurements 1.How many centimeters are there in a foot? (1 inch = 2.54 cm) 2.Measure the length and width of a table and calculate its surface area.

Units A physical quantity is a quantity that can be used in the mathematical equations of science and technology. A unit is a particular physical quantity, defined and adopted by convention, with which other particular quantities of the same kind are compared to express their value. SI base units: SI derived units: SI prefixes: Fundamental physical constants:

Significant Figures, Scientific Notation, and Metric Prefixes What is the speed of sound and light? Speed of sound in air (at 20 0 C) = 343 m/s or 767 MPH Speed of light = m/s Mean Earth-Sun Distance = m. How much time it take for the sunlight to reach earth?
