Presentation transcript:

L’ordre de pronoms Sometimes you may wish to replace two objects in a sentence with pronouns. In this lesson we will see where and what order to place the pronouns in French.

When the pronouns are in the third person singular and plural: le (it) la (it) l’ (it) les (them) lui (to / for him, her) leur (to / for them) Le, la, l’ and les will go BEFORE lui and leur. That is, the direct will go before the indirect object pronoun.

The placement remains the same as for when you are just using one pronoun: 1. Simple sentence: Je donne mon livre à Marc. Je le lui donne. 2. With an infinitive: Je vais envoyer cette lettre à mes grands-parents. Je vais la leur envoyer. 3. In negative commands: Ne montre pas ton devoir au prof! Ne le lui montre pas!

The placement remains the same as for when you are just using one pronoun: 4. With the passé composé: J’ai donné mon livre à Marc. Je le lui ai donné. 5. In a affirmative command: Envoie cette lettre à tes grands-parents. Envoie-la-leur.

When the indirect object pronoun is in the first or second person singular and plural: me (to / for me) te (to / for you) se (himself / herself nous (to / for us) vous (to / for you, you all) le (it) la (it) l’ (it) Les (them) Me, te, se, nous, and vous will go BEFORE le, la, l’ and les. That is, the indirect goes before the direct object pronoun.

The placement remains the same as for when you are just using one pronoun: 1. Simple sentence: Je te donne mon livre. Je te le donne. 2. With an infinitive: Je vais envoyer cette lettre à vous. Je vais vous l’ envoyer. 3. In negative commands: Ne nous montre pas ton devoir! Ne nous le montre pas!

4. With the passé composé: J’ai donné mon livre à toi. Je te l’ ai donné. *****5. In a affirmative commands, however, the order switches: Envoie cette lettre à nous. Envoie-la-nous.

*****5. In a affirmative commands, “me” will become “moi” when attached by itself: Envoie cette lettre à moi. Envoie-moi cette lettre. *****But when you attach both pronouns “moi” goes back to “me”: Envoie cette lettre à moi. Envoie-me-la.

When the indirect or direct object pronoun is used with “y” and “en”: le / la / l’ / les lui / leur me / te / nous / vous Y (there / it) En (some / any) Le, la, l’, les, me, te, nous, vous, lui and leur will go BEFORE “y” or “en”.

The placement remains the same as for when you are just using one pronoun: 1. Simple sentence: Je donne mon livre à Marc à l’école. Je le y donne. 2. With an infinitive: Je vais envoyer de l’argent à mes grands-parents. Je vais leur en envoyer. 3. In negative commands: Ne montre pas tes photos dans la classe! Ne les y montre pas!

The placement remains the same as for when you are just using one pronoun: 4. With the passé composé: J’ai donné des tickets à Marc. Je lui en ai donné. 5. In a affirmative command: Envoie de l’argent à tes grands-parents. Envoie-leur- en envoyer.

Summary: Me (moi) Te (toi) se nous vous le, l’ la, l’ les lui leur y
