Rural Hospital in 1999 Information technology had arrived in other industries and larger hospitals Small rural hospitals had only financial systems – some considering patient records Few computers; limited internet access

Critical Access Hospital Program Illinois Department of Public Health – Center for Rural Health – vision to provide funds for telehealth equipment and access to broadband Each new CAH received a grant for video equipment and access to broadband Hired a technology coordinator for this project

CAH Telehealth Services Technical Assistance Video equipment – network can connect up to 4 sites (meetings and education) Internet/broadband access – increase technology and start at PACS

Support of SIU School of Medicine Telehealth Education and Training as to how to use video conferencing Broadband support – started with 6 and now can access up to 14 sites interactively Grand Rounds Saved CAHs travel time and money as well as expanded opportunities

Pharmacy Night Service Beta Project Pharmacy User Group & HIT Workgroup Premise: to provide cost effective remote pharmacy approval of new orders using a single product capable of running multiple institutions and multiple formularies in a federated database. This solution would allow a single pharmacist to service multiple CAH concurrently.

Pharmacy Night Service Beta Project New orders would be scanned and uploaded thru a gateway to a facility specific folder Pharmacist on call would be notified Pharmacist would review order utilizing beta software Pharmacist would approve the order and notify CAH electronically or by label print.

Pharmacy Night Service Beta Project Scalability Interfaces with hospital information system for demographic data Interfaces with hospital pharmacy system for patient profiles Interfaces with hospital information system for charge passing.

Health Information Technology Network Implementation Grant 2007 Awarded $1.6M by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration to the Illinois Department of Public Health. IDPH has contracted with the Illinois Critical Access Hospital Network to oversee the project.
