“Introduction to Blogging” Article by: WordPress Presented by: Elizabeth Kuhn Presented by: Elizabeth Kuhn ENGL /09/07

Introduction Defining the “blog” Running a blog Archiving a blog Commenting in blogs Linking in blogs Adding features to blogs

Defining the “blog” Originally known as a WEBLOG, but abbreviated as “blog” A journal-like web page, updated often, and linking to other pages Some common features: –Chronological and categorized articles –Archives –Comment boards –Blogrolls (lists of related sites) –“Feeds”

Running a blog Software known as a CMS (Content Management System) enables the user to maintain a blog The user focuses on writing, while the “blogging tool” manages the site “Syndication Feeds” contain “Feedware” that automatically retrieves new content from another site as a “Feed” to the blog

Archiving a Blog Daily, monthly, or yearly Categorically –Ex. Blogroll: link to other web or blog pages By author Alphabetically

Comments in Blogs Users critique and link to other posts Backtracking introduces more users to conversations –Trackbacks One blogger can notify another about something of interest Commentator may post comments directed at another blogger in his/her own blog –Pingbacks Commenting in which no content is sent between blogs Linking between the pages of the two users is automatic Website owners may monitor comments –Useless comments, or spam, may be deleted

Linking in Blogs To other users’ blogs: –Permalinks A user will cite this URL when referring to another user’s blog –Link Manager A user can list and categorize links to other pages To your own blog – posts to blog The user does not need to use blogging interface –“Pretty” links Users get a feel for the content of the page –Ex. /index.php?p=423 vs. /archives/2003/05/23/my- cheese-sandwich/

Adding features to blogs Excerpts –Write your own –Automatically use first few paragraphs Plugins –Add more functions to site
