Placements for Student Teaching Placement card will be used to assign you to the field for student teaching Green - Undergraduates Salmon - Graduates 1. Complete all information. 2. Indicate if you are in an early childhood program or dual early childhood/ childhood program. 3. Indicate districts in which you have observed for other courses. 4. Fill in your student teaching course #. 5. Indicate special needs or requests.

Student Teaching Policies:  Student teachers are not placed in their home school districts.  Every student must have a field placement in a “high-needs” district, as defined by New York State.  Transportation is the responsibility of each student teacher.  Requests for change of placement/supervisor will be considered on an individual basis, by Dean Levinson.  Student teaching is full time, full semester.  The student teaching semester may be extended for students who require more time to meet the program standards.

Calendar: What happens when..  September 15 is the final closing date for Spring/Summer 2012 student teaching. Applications will be accepted immediately.  You will receive a Checklist of what is missing from your application.  Placement of applicants during September and October We will not be able to honor requests or guarantee placement on Long Island for late applicants.  You will receive your placement assignment at the end of the semester preceding student teaching.  Contact the placement immediately to set up an interview  Spring and summer student teachers (all certification areas): Student teaching begins on the first day of each semester. Spring 2012 – January 26/Summer 2012 TBA A mandatory full day Orientation takes place on campus, during the week prior to the first day. Spring 2012 – January 19/Summer 2012 TBA Bring a current transcript to Orientation

Calendar: What happens when..  Spring and Summer 2012 student teaching application closing date: September 15, 2011 A mandatory full day Orientation takes place on campus, during the Thursday on the week prior to the first day. Summer orientation in June  Summer student teaching (SPED, TESL, Working Teachers seeking a second certification. July 1 through mid-August. Orientation TBA, late in June.  Dual student teachers (Dual Early Childhood/ Childhood program): Intermediate placement (grades 4-5). Mandatory Orientation TBA, last week of the Fall semester.  Follow Hofstra calendar AND your school’s calendar, during student teaching.  Absences must be made up.  We reserve the right to extend your student teaching placement

Interview for Student Teaching  Professional dress and comportment are important  Be well groomed and self-confident.  Make eye contact with your interviewer.  Show your enthusiasm for teaching, for your subject, and most of all, for working with youngsters.  Be well prepared to discuss:  your background and courses  your philosophy of education  a lesson/unit you planned and/or taught  Familiarize yourself with the school/district prior to your interview

In Closing…  During student teaching, theory and practice converge in the field.  You will make a transition from student status to professional status.  Be reflective, be open to new experiences, take risks, and grow.  Good luck - you have our full support!
