Mount Buller SAC Strategy

Strategy  Introduced in 2004  It is really a policy !  Aim of strategy to establish long term management of six alpine resorts including Mount Buller.  The strategy is to establish various actions that will introduced sustainability into the alpine region.

Six aims 1. To manage the effects of climate change ( e.g. shorter season, less snow). 2. Resort use and visitation 3. Development of the resorts 4. Vibrant resources 5. Environment management 6. Steward ship of public land

Climate change  In this section, you could write about snow making as a major strategy to keep the resorts going. You need to access all the available data on snow making from the Mt Buller web site as well as our great data from our FW.

Resort use and Visitation  In this section, you could write about all the strategies that are being undertaken in terms of four season use of MB  WE have a lot of data from our FW on this aspect.  Refer to examples of 4 season use and the + and – of this use. E.g. BMX tracks, walking tracks, yoga retreats, use of MB chapel, International mogul site, etc  Try include the aspects of environmental and economic sustainability when discussing this strategy.

Environmental management  There are lots of small strategies you can do for this one. Know your facts for the strategy you are choosing to write about. These include  Pygmy possums( boulder fields)  Deer  Native vegetation ( protection)  Recycling ( water/ rubbish)  Cigarette butts( program)  Educational /information boards.

Environmental management part 2  The pygmy possum strategy has been done well in the past. Make sure you have all the data, details re the strategy and use spatial concepts  The recycling of rubbish has also been done well in the past. See the comment above.

Development of the Village/ Vibrant resorts/ Stewardship of public land  These three areas where not covered to a large extent of the FW as it is hard to collect primary and secondary data on them.

What do I need to do in this SAC ? Part 1 1. Have an understanding of the 2020 strategy. A paragraph is needed in the SAC to demonstrate your understanding. You can have the one page 2020 summary from your FW booklet pasted in the SAC to help you with this paragraph

SAC Requirements Please note some of the current management has adopted some of the future planning included for 2020.

Discussion of the Strategies Part 2 Discussion of the Strategies Part 2  The next part of the SAC will be a discussion of the strategies that are covered by the policy ( Alpine 2020)  You must write about 3 strategies  For this section you must do the following 3 times ) one for each strategy  Name the section from 2020 where the strategy comes from e.g. climate change, resort visitation, environment management  In detail describe the exact strategy, how it works, who implements it, when it is done etc. Make sure you refer back to data, geog media etc from your earlier section of the SAC

Evaluation of the Strategy Part 3  After each strategy you need to evaluate its effectiveness. Does it work ?You can do this aspect in either a SWOT, + and -, or SAFFEIT or simply discuss the benefit vs cost.  Make sure you include both old and new data, facts, figures in this section. Refer to geog media from your booklet

Final conclusion Part 4  For this section we need a summary paragraph looking at the policy as a whole and the future success of it.  You may wish to suggest some changes etc.

What can I take in  Your media booklet  The A4 summary sheet on 2020 ( your teacher will give this to you prior to the SAC) You have a copy already in your FW booklet.  The information of the specific strategies should be included in your SAC in earlier sections ( i.e. effects of use, current management, factors affecting, photographs etc)

How can I get my best mark ?  Know the strategies you will be writing about. Think about the SWOT ( you cannot take this in) !  Keep referring to your geog media you collected  Make sure you use your spatial concepts  Have your Geog media booklet more or less ready before you start the SAC on Friday 28th! ( We know that is not due into us until 4 th June)
