Relationships Under Stress March 20

Think About It … What do you think? Why? What do you think? Why? We all go through good and bad times …  Today we look at what Peter says about how to keep healthy relationships in all situations Hard times pull people apart. Hard times bind people together.

Listen for how Christianity is a “counter culture.” 1 Peter 2:11-12 (NIV) Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul. [12] Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

Conduct among Unbelievers How does Peter describe Christians as being different from unbelievers? Why, then, should believers keep away from sinful desires? How do these fleshly or sinful desires war against believers?

Conduct among Unbelievers How does knowing heaven is your real home (and you reside temporarily on earth) make temptations easier to resist? How might it make temptations harder to resist? According to Peter, why is it important for believers to live good lives? What does it mean to live a “good life”?

Conduct among Unbelievers Why do we need encouragement to live good lives among non-Christians? What kinds of good deeds would non- Christians see and take note?

Listen for reciprocal attitudes spouses should have. 1 Peter 3:1-7 (NIV) Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, [2] when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. [3] Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes.

Listen for reciprocal attitudes spouses should have. [4] Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight. [5] For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to make themselves beautiful. They were submissive to their own husbands,

Listen for reciprocal attitudes spouses should have. [6] like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her master. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear. [7] Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.

Conduct at Home Why did Peter encourage wives to submit to their husbands? What qualities can a believing wife demonstrate to witness to an unbelieving husband? Contrast inward and outward beauty, according to Peter InwardOutward

Conduct at Home Why is it easier to be beautiful on the outside rather than on the inside (men or women)? What is the challenge does Peter give husbands? What are some practical ways a husband can show honor to his wife? Why would a husband’s poor treatment of his wife affect his prayer life?

Listen for qualities that express humility. 1 Peter 3:8-12 (NIV) Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. [9] Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.

Listen for qualities that express humility. [10] For, "Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech. [11] He must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it. [12] For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil."

Conduct among Believers What incredible challenges did Peter give his readers? When is it hard for Christians to live in harmony with each other? Why? What must a person do who wants to love life?

Conduct among Believers When are you tempted to return evil with evil and insult with insult? Why? It takes two to keep conflict going. How does “dropping the rope” in a verbal tug-of-war stop the war? In what practical way could you return an insult with a blessing?

Application Christians live in the world, but must not be of the world – – Live a consistent Christian lifestyle – – Live honorably in the midst of a dishonorable world – – Live in such a way that even unbelievers will give glory to God for your attitudes and actions

Application Christian spouses are to honor each other – – If one spouse is an unbeliever, the believer should seek to win the other by how you live rather than by preaching at them – – This week seek to show faithfulness, understanding, and consideration to each other

Application Believers within a local church body don’t always agree on everything – – Pray that when this happens you will not lose unity among believers – – Look for areas of agreement – – Focus on how you could be working together
