Cell Division. Why do cells divide? For an organism to grow → add more cells To replace lost or damaged cells The result is two cells genetically identical.

Basic Genetics & Mitosis A.P. Biology

Status Check In a human cell, how many chromosomes to we have?

Big Idea Life begets life—all life has to originate from other life (remember cells are living) Cells are always being replaced in your body (except for very specific ones) Cells need to undergo certain preparations before it divides

Key Vocabulary Somatic cells—all cells that have a full set of paired chromosomes; all cells except reproductive cells (sperm & egg) Genome—the complete set of all the DNA in an organism; all its genes Gene—a specific sequence in DNA that codes for a specific trait Chromatin—One strand of DNA, unwound

Chromosome Structure Chromatin—strand DNA Chromatid—one side of the chromosome Chromosome—whole thing (X) Centromere—center region that holds chromatids together

Chromosome Features Chromatin is copied, condenses into a chromosome In a single chromosome, both chromatids are genetically the same!!!! (copies of each other) Chromatids split apart during mitosis to become new DNA in daughter cells

Status Check Insert the picture of the chromosome into your whiteboard You will circle the appropriate part when it is called out
