Task Force on Active Learning in the Clinical Years Liz Dreesen, MD Division of Trauma and Critical Care Department of Surgery

The Problem: Perfect Storm  80 hour week gives residents less time to teach  Attendings have to “make their salary” and don’t get paid to teach  Americans don’t want to be “guinea pigs More ancillary services More ancillary services Increased attending supervision Increased attending supervision  Medicare documentation rules have changed documentation

The Problem

Another part of The Problem

Easy (relatively) Fixes  Beepers in web exchange  Scrubs for overnight call/procedural rotations  Long distance codes  Sufficient call rooms  Hospital wide understanding of documentation rules  CPOE

Bigger Picture  How much simulation/didactics/portfolios should we have?  Uniform clerkship expectations (call, checklists)  Require rotations on phlebotomy, IV teams, PT  Role of standardized testing in clerkship grades  Teaching service within the hospital  Educational grand rounds by AOE
