2 A Brief History of EA in the Government Two separate but converging chapters: –DoD Architectural Framework (DoDAF): A standard way to organize an enterprise architecture (EA) or systems architecture into complementary and consistent views. 8 DoD Architectural Framework (DoDAF) While it is clearly aimed at military systems, DoDAF has broad applicability across the private, public and voluntary sectors around the world, and represents only one of a large number of systems architecture frameworks. It is especially suited to large systems with complex integration and interoperability challenges, and is apparently unique in its use of "operational views" detailing the external customer's operating domain in which the developing system will operate (reference: Zachman framework). –See Wikipedia.Wikipedia

9 DoD Architectural Framework (DoDAF) Harmonization between national architecture frameworks: –There is an OMG effort to standardise a UML Profile for military architecture frameworks UPDM (UML Profile for DoDAF and MODAF). In addition, the IDEAS Group is a four nation (Australia, Canada, UK, USA + NATO as observers) effort to develop a formal ontology for enterprise architecture. 10 The IDEAS Group The IDEAS Group is the International Defence Enterprise Architecture Specification for exchange Group. The deliverable of the project is a data exchange format for military Enterprise Architectures. The scope is four nation (plus NATO as observers) and covers MODAF (UK), DoDAF (USA), DNDAF (Canada) and the Australian Defence Architecture Framework. The work has begun with the development of a formal ontology to specify the data exchange semantics. The W3C Resource Description Framework and Web Ontology Language (XML) will be the format used for data exchange.
