Time, Rate, and Productivity These three are covered in the next narrated presentation.

Utilization Utilization is the ratio of actual production to capacity. If you produce 40 units a day, but have enough equipment and people to produce 50 units a day, then your utilization is 80% The intuitive sense is that unused capacity is bad- but that is not always true. Capacity, utilization, and waiting time are interrelated. We will discuss this in detail in unit 3 on Capacity.

Defects, Returns and Complaints Some aspects of quality are hard to measure: leather versus cloth seats Countable quality measures: –Number of defects or % defective –Number of items returned –Number of complaints registered More in Unit 5 on Quality

Cycle service level Has to do with inventory Cycle service level is the percentage of time that you have material available to meet demand while you are waiting for an order to arrive. Stockout probability is the percentage of time that you run out of stock, while waiting for an order to arrive.

Inventory Turnover A measure of how quickly you are using inventory, compared to the average amount of inventory you keep on hand. Can be expressed two ways: –Turns per year –Average weeks of supply
